The riding double was firstly to show how important having good control of the throttle, clutch and brakes is and then to show how to be relaxed and not tighten up, because then the balance goes out the window. It is pretty easy to feel it when riding double, both for the rider and the passenger (who is, in these cases, tightening up!) And it can break down some fear barriers as well.

Plus it was easier than walking up and down the hill too!

Rob, I'm not sure if that was the same hill climb or not. I am sure that that hill was not very smooth to some of the riders who had never gone up anything even close to that before. The part you can see in the above picture was at most 1/3 of the climb. It turned right at the top, went up to a rocky section, turned left, went up to an off camber right hand curve through a tunnel then opened up into the final rutted out climb. It had just about everything. Everyone attempted it. Some had some issues. Some got the ride of their lives. But in the end, everyone was standing at the top with their bikes. I was actually proud of some of the guys who I thought would opt out but didn't.

Mark made it up with no problems.

Bob stopped to visit with Heather and Jon.

    Then continued on.

    Then to the final section.

    Here comes Joel's XR.

    Wow that thing is moving!

Mystery solved. Heather must have wanted to ride it.

Looks like Jon is getting tired of picking people up. I wonder what Jimmy must feel like about now.

    Waiting for the next victim.

    Victims?

    Passenger drop off.

Bike is just about in the clear.

BJ will have to do the rest on his own. After what he just went through, it will seem like a walk in the park.

That was actually a really cool hill. A few years ago, I would have wanted nothing to do with it. Now I wish I could have gone up and down it about 20 times.

Mikko paddles his way up the last section.

Carsten gets a ride he won't soon forget. Now Carsten has probably never ridden bitch before under any circumstances. To take his maiden voyage on the back of his own 990 going up a gnarly hill climb in the dirt must have taken a serious leap of faith. So Jimmy would not only have to wrestle that beast of a bike up that hill, but would have to counter the forces that a nervous passenger was applying to the bike. The thing is, no wrestling was involved. In fact, Jimmy slowly and deliberately made his way up that hill, all the while calmly talking to the rider and pointing things out along the way. Don't let the pictures fool you. That was a steep, rocky hill with plenty of turns and ruts. It was pretty amazing to watch.

This is why I do my best to get up a hill on my bike. To a fat guy, walking up a hill is way worse than falling while riding up.

From that hill climb we went right into another. This one wasn't nearly as steep or difficult. It did however have it's own challenges in the way of ruts, off camber and some step ups. Picking a good line was very beneficial here. Here is BJ making his way up.

    Doing a pretty good job.

    He's almost there.

Looks like the hike up the last hill motivated Joel to ride up this one.

Followed by his personal riding assistant, Heather.

Luanna was a little tired after that last hill so she found a shady spot to take a nap.

This water crossing was only a few inches deep but it was the only one we found. Here's BJ.

Jimmy's life seems to be a balancing act.

His geotrache reward was a diaper in a bag.

    Let's go do some riding.

After doing some sandy hill practice and a nice single track trail, we headed back to camp for lunch. After lunch, we spent the rest of the day riding some nice trails where we could practice and reinforce the things we learned.

I was just getting into my groove and wanted to keep riding. I knew we would soon be done so I tried to get that last bit of something before camp. The reason that tree got in my way was because I had lost focus and defaulted back to my pre-class riding habits. My weekend did end with a great note. I would never let a little fall like that come between me and a great weekend.
