The other reason I wanted to get out; put the point & shoots through their paces to see what photos I can come up with on an actual ride... The ride to Tampa earlier this morning was brutal but as the sun came up the temperature warmed and it was riding bliss along the Florida beaches...

heading back to Kissimmee I took the back roads and hit some Historic Districts along the way...

I live over in Clearwater. Where were the photos of the historic districts taken? I am always looking to get out of the heavy traffic around Tampa Bay.

I used US-92 and US-17 on the way back... Much slower pace so you can eyeball some scenery... Those photos were taken in Hanes City.

The Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum is located in Plant City, historic districts in Lake Mortan, Davenport, and downtown Kissimmee.

    Stunning Rudy!!

    When y’all westbound?

Hopefully when you do it won’t be a straight line.

Hey Sam, I'm not heading back until the first week in March...

No straight line for my meander back west... I'm looking at just short of two weeks to make it back home...

~ COVID 19 continues to hamper riding opportunities even in 2021...

Since I'm already here on the east coast I wanted to plan a ride up to Long Island, NY to see my old stomping grounds. I flew the coop in 1985 and we've visited here and there to see my parents and siblings. The memories were still fresh back then but it's been over two decades and those memories have long faded. The last time I was on Long Island was in the early 2000s to visit my parents before they moved down to Florida. I wanted to ride down memory lane for old time sake; the schools I attended, my first job where I met Mrs. B8, the roller rink my dad would drop me off on Friday nights, the mall we used to hang out on the weekends, the bagel shops and delis, Calda Pizzeria where I would go during my lunch period... but that doesn't seem likely right now.

In planning my route up to NY I ran against a road block. New York requires that you to jump through some hurdles with quarantining and COVID tests according to their Travel Advisory... Looks like I'll have to move that ride to the bucket list for a later date. I don't feel like getting pulled over with my California plates and having to answer Mr. PoPo's questions... I have been profiled several times for just having California plates. In 2018 while driving home from a Christmas visit with my parents, I passed a state trooper on the side of the road in TN, going with the flow of traffic mind you, state popo pulls out and starts to tail me for several miles, then he pulls up besides me for a minute or so, and finally decides to pull me over and asks for the usual documents only to let me go. On the same highway on the same day not more than a few miles down the road same thing; popo pulls out, tails me for a few minutes, and pulls besides me to have a looksy but doesn't pull me over... No thank you...

restricted states vs non-restricted states as of 14 Jan 2021... I'll be required to quarantine for 10 days once I get home...

like the song says; one of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong... which would lead to more questions by locals and the popo... I'm just glad the southern part of the US is virtually unrestricted for travel with the exception of NM and CA...

~ Literally feels like Ground Hogs Day the movie...

I've been in Kissimmee since 24 Oct of last year helping my parents with medical appointments, DIY fixit stuff, errands, and general chores around the house. When I'm not out riding or helping my parents; I sit at the dining room table watching TV, or I'm on the laptop doing some reading, or making posts on Adv Rider. So it literally has felt like ground hogs day waiting to see if my parents need anything. But now I'm happy to say that my father's condition has improved by 95% according to his doctor.

    then and now...
    Untitled.jpg

My mother and I have been cracking the whip on my dad about; taking his medicine, eating proper meals, pushing the protein drinks, and getting exercise. He had lost 25 lbs since the COVID pandemic hit with not being able to get out and interact with their friends. When I first got here, he was weak and could barely walk around the block before calling it quits... but now he's up to walking an hour each day by himself.

Well a few days ago my Mom hinted about the weather across the country and so it's almost time for me to head back home. But first I have to get the Duc ready with an oil change and a new rear tire. I overdid my day trips in Florida by adding another 2K miles on top of the 2.7K cross country trip out. I can get another 1.5K out of the rear but they won't get me home.... that'll get me a couple more trips around here before I head back... At least I was able to knock out Key West...

    ride report to follow...
    1A.jpg

I'll be leaving a full month before my planned departure time in March. I was looking at three weeks to ride back to SoCal but the weather right now isn't conducive for some cross-country motography with the winter storms up north pushing the cooler temperatures south. It's also too soon for the Bluebonnets to come out in the Texas Hill Country, something that I missed the last time...

I'll have to come up with another game plan... maybe a truncated trip back home while hitting Big Bend National Park then onto SoCal to refit and resupply. I could take the Ranger back east for some base camping with one of the other bikes... :hmmmmm That'll give me more staying power once the weather warms up... we'll see... In the meantime I gotta earn more "happy wife, happy life points..."

He was down to 125 lbs when I got here... I'm glad the emergency got averted and even more glad that I scheduled their vaccine shots since they are not internet/tech savvy...

Good work on your father. Very noticeable improvement. Giving the guy the beer and bbq treatment to put the weight back on?

Thanks for the well wishes and kind thoughts everyone...

I hope to get the Duc ready for departure by next week and get some much needed saddle time after sitting semi-idle for the past few months...

I'm ready to get on the road myself...

~ Southern California by way of Key West...

    (Day 1, 30 Jan 2021)

Well it's that time. Time to go that is but not without a trip down to Key West. I've ridden to Key West two previous times on the bike and each time I took the direct route down. This time I wanted to ramble down and take the road less traveled and find some dirt and gravel. I left early Saturday morning and I stayed on the backroads as much as I could until the only choice led to US Routes... The ride down was lined with orchards and small communities... I prefer going a slower pace so I can soak in the sun, sights, and smells...
