We could not start the bike on Saturday. Adrian pointed out that decompresser cable was too slack. After the bike started with lots of popping and farting. Then settled down to a smooth idle.

Interesting that you've needed a heli-coil in the bottom oil filter screw - I needed exactly the same thing.

Well..... It did run for very long. The original CDI unit has died and is being replaced with after market one.


Have quite a large oil leak from the bottom allen key being stripped on the oil filter. Fingers crossed it should be fixed by a heli coil soon.


Waiting on new muffler coming from Germany to quieten things down a bit.

Nearly there Dan. May I ask where you procured the racing block decal on the front fender? I'm looking for one for my '84 XT600 and I have only seen the newer graphic.

Tapping a new thread for the Heli coil to go in. Using Andy"s eye in keeping the tap straight.


Heli coil in place. Making sure that the gallery is not blocked.


I had none of the original bolts for the oil cover. Just trying to figure out what is so special about the bottom bolt. Is the shank smaller than the thread? :

Where the hole is located in the casing. The thread of what ever bolt is used covers the hole. Under pressure there would be oil seep past the threads.

Just been reminded to place the O ring under the cover that was not there before.

What brand is that muffler? Cost? Great rebulit!

Thanks Big Ed. The muffler is made by an Italian company called Marving. They make quite a few versions of mufflers for XT600's in loud or quite, Steel, Alu or Stainless.

I bought a quite steel one. A Marving EDR from Ebay.de at a cost of 170 euros ($250 us)

Beautiful job on the restoration. I have no patience for doing the work myself, but I love seeing old machinery as it looked when it was new.
