Leaving from Northern Kentucky (Boone county) 10/10. Will be picking the route up in Leburn, KY; where downpour and lightning storms cut our trip short last summer in late June and finishing in Livingston, KY where we began. Bike choice is vastly different this time around. I'll be humping a KTM 790 adventure on shinko 805/804s my counterpart will be on a 1090r. Last summer we had pushed a 450exc and 500exc respectively. I'll be taking pictures and updating the RR upon return home.

    Launch day

My counterpart is a third-shifter so I spent the morning gathering last minutes for the bike and trip. Departed from Union, KY around 12:30. Hit I-75 to 64 into Slade to fill our water supply from the pipe near the Nada tunnel. Continued slabbing it on E Mountain Parkway to begin our adventure in Leburn, KY. The tracks into Matewan were nothing difficult mostly if not all pavement but really nice twistys. Put up camp in Matewan behind the Police Department/City building near the Devil Anse trail head. After setting up camp we were able to walk down near the river and wash up a bit before dinner. After careful debate we decided to forego treating ourselves to Wingos Grill and just heated some cans of Chef. Spent the evening watching YouTube videos and making a run for sweets and some milk. Around 9:30 the local police made contact with us and we chatted for about a half hour before calling it a night.

    Day 2

Clif Bar for breakfast, packed the bikes down and left from Matewan, WV. Good trails right out of the gate. Attempted a hard section and both big bikes made it up the initial climb without too much fuss but the decent on the other side was a little daunting so we turned around and decided to take the main loop instead. We got turned around in some mining operations near Conaway, VA but sorted things out and got back on the route. Due to lost time there we pushed on without lunch and ended up eating at Subway in Elkhorn, KY around 2pm. After lunch we fueled up and grabbed some supplies before getting back on the road. Decided to make for Kingdom Come State Park for camp. The offroad section between Maggards and Black Mountain kicked my ass on the big bike. We spotted a copperhead (dead) along this section too. Forecast is calling for rain in the AM praying we don’t get too wet!

    Day 3

Wake up to torrential downpour at Kingdom Come State Park. Packed the bikes down and hit the Little Shepherd Trail. Decided to reroute to Harlan and cut out half of the Little Shepherd Trail. Slabbed it into Harlan because of persisting showers and brutal cold. Decided to stop at Taco Bell in town for lunch and made the decision to head back home. Ended up changing plans and taking the night in Lexington playing some Nintendo games with the guys and having some drinks!
