Kawasaki Versys, F800GS, Honda Transalp or a KTM 640?

    Hi guys and girls.

I'm looking at crossing over from the world of tar over to something more engaging. I took out the F800 last week, and I'm sorry for all those who love their Beemers, but I wasn't very impressed with their new 800. It went well, but it seemed lacking in the power department. Maybe it's just me, I've got a very capable SV650. Any recomendations for a newby looking to do some long distance riding with the option to go dirt riding now and then? I've got a budget of +_ R70 000 - R100 000.

    Any recomendations would be appreciated.

did u test teh 800 GS or the 650 GS..

the 800 should put out more than a sv650.

offroad power is not all that important as on the tar....

any of those will be good but the 640 is incredibly off road focussed so decide what you waant to do an take it from there.

in your list i would go with the bmw gs800

Yamaha 660Z Tenere, they arrive in SA in January. If you are considering taking the long way around on trips it may be a consideration. If you want to do mostly highway you would be better off with a twin.

You have (had?) a Suzuki SV650 "V-Strom" you say!?
I'm supprized u want to upgrade!? I went over to visit my brothers in the USA in 2006 & a friend of my brother had a number of bikes! His favorite was the V-Strom! He recons great on & off road!
Personally, I've just spoilt myself & acquired a 2007 Kawasaki Versys! Gr8 bike! The only thing I don't like about it is it's not built too "rugged"! (Like the V-strom!?)
I too would like my next bike to be a bit more "rugged"! The problem always seems to be the trade-off between road & off!
Bikes I'm now looking at are:
    - KTM640 (or the new 690 - which is actually a 660!)
    - BMW 800GS (altho many say its not woth the price!?)
    - Yamaha Tenére 660 (or its new Big-brother!?)
    - BMW 1200GS (my bro has one! Wow! Awesome power!)
    What say ye?

I felt the same way about the F800 power, and I'm coming from a Vstrom 650. Just not enough to write home about.

Have you considered the KTM 990/950? Might be a bit more than your budget, but it's got a super motor and lots of high end components.
