Apart from everything else in this thread, is this for real? The KLR is K's best selling bike? I would not have guessed that.

Tough? Which part exactly? Once my nearly new KLR seized at 18k miles I went in search of an engine, since the rest of the bike was in good shape. After all, I can buy a complete ST1300 fuel injected engine used for $300-500 all day long. They are tough and reliable, so engines are cheap...the engines last, so good supply, and they don't wear out, so no demand = cheap engines.

So what did I find for the mighty KLR? In several months I found exactly two engines- one had high mileage and possible issues (kudos to the seller for being honest) for $900, and another claiming to be a low mileage, good condition engine for $1200. What I did find were dozens of either bottom ends or top ends. Why would someone disassemble a good running engine to sell separately? They wouldn't. So those were parts off damaged KLR engines. Many more damaged ones being sold for parts than complete engines. That doesn't speak well of the strength of the heart of the KLR. I ended up selling the bike as a disassembled basket case after a couple years without finding an affordable engine. The value of a complete KLR wasn't high enough to warrant spending $1200 to repair it.

I'm honestly not saddened by the demise of the KLR. Hopefully Kawasaki will bring out a modern replacement. Fuel injection, fresh design, modern gauges, better suspension, and far less weight.

Helluva 2nd post. Relax, boss. The KLR engine ran practically unchanged for over 30 years. A huge second handmarket is to be expected after three decades. I'm sorry your single example died on you. But that does not reflect much on the KLR's track record. So why did yours seize? Ran it out of oil like everyone else that kills one?

Does this mean no more “Which oil should I use in my KLR” threads. Will doohickeys be a thing of the past as well? How will I know which tire will be needed for my trip to the lake via a gravel road without a KLR forum? Is Shell going out of business? Rotella...? Hello....? Anyone? WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH MY MILK CRATE?!?!?!

    AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!
I’ve gotta run and go get on Facebook. They’ll tell me what I need to do....

The big question here is what will replace it?

A streetier twin like many are speculating.

A new thumper to compete with the 450L?

    Something inbetween?

Whatever they do I hope it weighs a bit less. Kawi has shown they can shave weight off even their lower priced bikes.

Yeah, I'm down. Their spies tipped them off. One more year for the 650L,most likely all 2018 models.
The new 450 will be broken down and rebuild as a 500cc thumper and be more like the XTZ660.
    Seems plausible.

I kind of feel like that dumb dog on the farm now.

That seems to be the common lore.

A dealership may make more up front cash on Super Sport, but think of a million knive cuts with the KLR.
each dealership selling about three at year from 1987 on... with only one refresh. RTW.
An entire book or movie should be made in this MC.
KLR Chuck akd Eagle Mike should apart of the production and in the movie.
The person with the most respect in all four of the separate website forums should be involved too.
Ohh, and the person with the most milage on a 1987 and 2008 should be part of the movie.
    3 hour movie easy.

I would like to look at the economy of scale of the MC.
It would impress a lot of business people who have never heard of her.

I keep seeing those as the only two speculative options...am I the only one who wants a similar bike with a similar sized engine but just better everything? Like, my ideal outcome would be for Kawasaki to beat Yamaha to the punch and release a T7 concept competitor before Yamaha even releases the T7.
