I was talking to Rex last week discussing this fuel filters, I might look at putting the Can-Am external fuel filter on my 501 just like some of us run on the 701's.
Not sure if anyone else is running an external filter or not.

    The black
the black contamination is produced by the brushes & commutators in the pump, it’s then sent to the filter where it eventually blocks &increases the resistance and hence the pump runs hot, & produces more goop, change the filter often is the only remedy until they improve the pumps

I do mine with every oil change 5000km, this is on my 690. The filter element is always a dark grey with no particles in it and not callapsed like the above, also always carry a spare pump.

I replaced the 6x20 mm (seat) screw with a 40 mm screw and with a lock nut screwed up to the correct position it sits nicely inside the new access hole , so I no longer have to wrestle with the sidecover to remove the seat 3859CAD0-C996-4F9D-A6AF-5A4BCC9C8437.jpeg 9B6A6364-6164-4993-A8FA-C1F4F3D3DF7F.jpeg

When you’re all loaded up and in the sand, ( or mud),finding your bike lying on it’s side just sucks, iv got a habit of keeping stuff ( like the strong plastic air box off the old KTM 990.), which came in handy to solve the Husqvarna design fault on these sidestands. Are you renting a bike? Should be an interesting experience, do they even have gravel roads or forest tracks?, looking forward to pics, enjoy.

I took the 500 for a 1200 km road trip over the long weekend to the greymouth street races.

Had some road tires on, and the bike went surprisingly well.

Tonight I did an oil and filter change, all good there.

I thought I would check the fuel filter as well, glad I did.
    This is after 21 hours.

Quite a lot of carbon in there from the pump brushes

I was thinking the idle was a bit erratic, maybe this is the cause?

Crikey!! I've done 70 hours on the 501, maybe it's time for a new fuel filter.
