These model 500's are essentially unchanged from 2012. Seen them go for as little as $6500. Some already set up with tank and cush for around $8k. Most with under 10k on them so plenty of life left.

Valves rarely move , piston and rings good for 20k - they are a good adv / enduro steed.

I've got 150hrs and 10,500 kms on my '13 501. Back in 2013 it had 6hrs when it did it's first race - the yellow mountain cross country for 6 hours it was mostly wide open throttle and front end lofted (refer avatar). Since then it has seen me through numerous pony express and trail rides, a couple years of single track and then it crossed the Simpson and did a 4800km lap of the centre back in June last year. It is the best all round bike I've ever owned. Only burns a 100ml of oil over 1500kms if ridden hard and hasn't had the valves move from what they measured up at 1hr old.

Only service item that I stick to the book is the fork oil every 50hrs, other than that it's run penrite 10w/60 for 3 years and genuine filters. I keep a handful of the little inline fuel screens in my tool bag and a sock on the tank filler. Touch wood it's been bomb proof so far. A great adv/enduro bike as far as I'm concerned.

Either Japan or Europe will have to come out with something bloody spectacular for me to replace this bike with!

yeah I did ADVx & was chatting to a bloke at Kulgera on a 500 about his as an adventure bike & he didnt have any dramas. He said he was changing oil every 2000Km. Knowing what I know now about that event, I wish Id done it on a 500 :lol3

Never really considered the 500 before so this has me quite interested and will no doubt go and waste some of works time checking the net about them at lunch time. Quick question though, having something to do with KTM singles previously....vibration, what's it like of these beasts?

I always raced 2 bangers in my day so all these 4strokes are smooth as silk for me.

Apparently the old 690/640 singles were very bad but these are quite smooth

Will know definitely after tomorrows maiden ride.

Weeeelll vibes wise I have a 1964 Norton Atlas which, due to the horrendous vibes was known to "divest itself of its parts with the gay abandon of a youthful stripper" a trait thankfully none of my old 2 strokes had :lol3. I've tried the 640, and ran a 660 Rallye for a while and though they are great machines, one thing that always irritated me was the vibes. Fine for short distances etc but over a long distance nah, it just made me cranky. Can't wait to hear how your maiden voyage turns out!

I can still read the little screen on my Garmin 64ST GPS at most RPM and speed, I run 15/48 if lots of open and carry a 14 just in case. 14/48 went really well across the Simpson fully loaded.

Doesn't vibe anything like what my TT600 does either. Cush hub seemed to half the noticeable vibrations on hard pack or sealed roads.

My old RFS 450EXC was incredibly smooth

Way smoother than the (then) youthful 690

My '15 500 was acceptable with the wheels balanced and dodgy rubber mounted bars. Just removed bars and added rubber from an inner tube!
