Or a you didn't realize it and possibly rolled the throttle a little too much, the accel pump can flood them. A friend clued me into a RFS starting drill, when it's cold roll the throttle on 2x, then crank it, as it turns over give it a small amount of throttle and it should light right off. Try that next time it's cold & see how you like it.
Well... think I found the source of metal shavings that’s been clogging up my oil filters and sticking to the magnetic drain plug! Probably 3-4mm loss of profile on the exhaust lobe, a nice ridge started on the intake and both rollers showing significant wear. I’m installing a HotCams Stage 1 cam and a friend is doing the valves/springs for me. Lower connecting rod bearing feels tight. The piston has over 200hrs on it so a new Wiseco is going in. This will be the 3rd piston and I can still make out Factory hone marks in the cylinder bore! There is some minor scuffing fore and aft sides but nothing too dramatic. I’ve been riding on borrowed time with the intake valves but had no idea the cam was so fucked. Bike was running strong, starting normal and idling without issues. Can’t wait to get it back together.
That is some serious wear! I remember seeing that when I worked on BMW cars in the eighties. May be worth checking the flow of oil to the top end, just in case it is compromised.
I can loosen the banjo bolt from oil feed line to top of valve cover... if oil flows there, I assume the pressure is adequate???
At least you will know oil is getting to the top of the engine, and avoid trashing you new camshaft & valve gear.
Soooo...my XCW was built for the '08 Dakar and they added some extra wiring harness to put it all together. Now I'm looking to replace that with an EXC harness hopefully to make it a little easier to put back the roadbook and maybe some aux lights. The issue I'm having is the colour codes for the wires do not match the wiring diagram I have for an '07 EXC. The product code on the harness vs the wiring diagram shows the last digit is different. I think one is an 003 and one is an 002 so I don't know the difference. The only plug so far that matches is the tail light. Anyone have any thoughts? Plus I'm terrible with electrics so that doesn't help either.
Mike; I used a Rocky Mountain and stock EXC harness for my bastardized wiring loom on my 520. I’m good with electrical, so your mileage may vary?? the thing I liked about the Rocky Mountain was it was only about $30 and I just used what I needed. if you want, come over with some beers and we’ll figure it out!! cheers
What's the word on hotcams for these bikes? In the XR world some guys swear they last forever, other guys swear they're made of butter. Just curious in case I ever find myself needing a replacement cam as well.
Did some light DS riding this weekend in chilly central Texas. As many dirt roads as we could find in the vicinity of Lake Whitney. First run of any distance on the 525. She’s a pleasure to ride on almost any surface and comfortably loping up to about 65. Also returned 50mpg.
I hope, good! I've never replaced a camshaft on any of my previous machines. From the HotCam website, they claim power gains in the low to midrange. Not that it needs anymore umph! but I'll take it. Still waiting for the head to get back then I can reassemble this beast.
That was my thought also!!! I met a girl once on a bicycle trip that was from Tucson.......she said she had a hard time riding when it was below 90*'s!! Cheers
We’re in Texas, so thin blooded for sure. 30 overnight in my tent plus a moist and gusty 55 without wind protection or layers was fairly brisk to me. I know, all y’all ride in 15 below in vented gear cuz you’re THAT hard core. I get it.
Suspension respring and revalved by Bob at Future Shocks. So plush now, has much better drive as well. Need some more miles to pass judgement on the Tusk Recons.
