I've just seen this pop up being advertised and wondering if any of the inmates here have done it from the UK before? I have a 790advR and am very tempted!

Who has done it and what are my options to get me and my bike to Greece? Its a 2000 mile van drive/ride...

I was looking at this too. I am up in Scotland. However, they do not allow the 525exc to take part...

Ive seen bulgaria bike shipping which seem a good outfit, and would be a nice journey south into Greece. An option at least, although what looks like an expensive one!

I'm not very organized at the moment but keep in touch. We may be able to combine efforts in some way.

You gotten any further with your planning guys?

I'm looking at riding down from St. Malo, North France to Venice and get a 24hr boat down to Patras, Greece which is less than an hour away from Nafpaktos.

Boat leaves Venice at 1pm on Sunday and will want to be at the Ferry a few hours beforehand.

I am planning on getting the Thursday evening boat over to St. Malo after work. Getting down to Laval or similar ~1.5 hours. Then hitting the road Friday morning and getting as south east as possible, past Lyon, maybe even into Italy to make Saturday easier.

Hopefully be in Venice or at least close by Saturday night. Then chill out Sunday morning and have breakfast somewhere nice with a coffee waiting for the ferry.

Winston do you have an option to use auto train close to you and skip the boring highway ride?

    Dunno.

Can you put a bike on a freight train in France? I assume so but never thought about doing it.

I've the week after the rally to travel up through either Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia etc. or take the ferry over to Italy and ride up the coast and over the Alps and into Switzerland.. :hmmmmm

Check this link and nicely drawn map:

    https://www.seat61.com/Motorail.htm

Save yourself energy, tires and nerves and skip highway.

Riding back across Balkans is great route, if you happen to pass through Zagreb stop by our place there is always many overlanding travellers on motorcycles and 4x4 staying, stopping by, doing repairs etc.

PS TET in the Balkans starts 1,5 h from our place so getting back from Greece on TET would be cool option

@dooby wow thank you for the info I'll look into that

Agreed the TET would a very cool option and just after the rally I'd imagine there would be a fair few guys planning on using it on the way back up that would be awesome

And thanks, if I am close by I'd love to see Zagreb. Plus there will no doubt be maintenance work and possible tyre changing needing seeing to by then.

In the meantime what is your plan? Are you thinking of hiring or do you have such a van?

No van myself but I've hired them before,(riding through Europe is okay the 1st couple of times only) usually just me and a mate hire one but its not actually that much more costly and either something like a Luton type van or crewcab and trailer, if you stay in camp sites and cook for yourself you can really cut the costs down if there is 3/4 of you.
