    Day 2

I was up by 4:30am to ensure a rolling start at 6am on the dot. Many other riders were thinking the exact same thing.

Grumpy’s shooters caught this cool photo before the sun came up.

It was a very cold but beautiful morning in the desert. This was on the power line road that parallels the north side of I15 on the way to Baker.

    The power lines.

Heading into Baker to gas up and meet back up with Ben.

Ben, back on the dirt leaving Baker. I was glad to take this way, as a few years ago we took the deep sand power line road directly out of Baker.

    Ben with the salute.

    Ben and I.

We ended up being the first ones into Sandy Valley, with our tanks full and our bikes washed. We picked up some cool t-shirts the fire department was selling too.

After lunch we hit this river wash, but were not feeling it. So we kept on the wide dirt road.

Ben continued on to Vegas, and I decided to jump onto the hard way through Red Rocks. It had a nice start.

Dropping down into the river wash was interesting. I was the first one in the wash and since I did not see any tire tracks, I was convinced I was in the wrong place and there was a hidden trail just outside the wash I could not see. Sometimes I would end up in dead ends in the wash as the sides would rise up a few feet, forcing me to turn around and try another path.

Finally got out of the wash, and into the rocky climbs. A momentary lapse of concentration resulted in a 1mph tip over.

    Getting rough.

The rocks on the way up were tough but I made it. The views coming down the east side was just awesome.

Another rider offered to snap my photo.

    Victory shot!

Final installment. This is what made it the LAB2V2LA. :D

Day 3…our ride from Vegas back to Palmdale/LA via mostly dirt.

A few others agreed to join for the ride back to Palmdale via dirt. Ben (BenTravelin), Dan (YellowPig), and Mike (not an inmate yet) joined for the ride. Here is Ben and I loading gear back on the bike, around 5:45am.

A 6am rolling start, and we top off the bikes as well our stomachs at McDonalds. Dan showing the awesome sunrise.

We headed out on 160, and then jumped on a cool desert dual track to keep heading west.

The two track was a ton of fun, good for big bikes, rolling in and out of washes without too much trouble. A great way to start the day. Here the two track dumps us back onto Tecopa Rd, just east of the CA state line.

Same spot, looking the opposite way.

    Mike, heading into Shoshone.

    Gas price photo at Shoshone.

Ben decided to bail at Shoshone due to bike concerns, leaving just Dan and Mike and I.

Jumping onto West Side Road, from the south end at Badwater Rd. About to start the ascent to Stripped Butte.

Quick stop at the Warm Springs cabin, with Dan.

Between Warm Springs and Stripped Butte.

    Dan
    [IMG]

A rare shot of me, at Stripped Butte.

    Dan.

A small challenge heading up the rocks at Mengal Pass.

The water is flowing heading down Goler Wash.

    Dan riding the Goler Step.

From the valley floor, on the Escape Route before climbing up. Clouds look menacing.

    Getting rocky.

    Climbing up and up.

I tried the steeper way, not a good idea.

    A quick rest on top.

A great view of Panamint Valley.

    The Trona Pinnacles.

Racing the dropping sun, on Randsburg Mojave Road.

Heading south on the power line roads just west of Mojave/Palmdale.

An odd shortcut Dan found, dropping us to the Streets of Willow.

Almost to Palmdale. There goes the sun!

And then Mike and Dan peeled off to get to their trucks at Palmdale Supercycles. I continued on my rode back to Los Angeles. Having watched the radar reports throughout the day, I knew that 14 was still getting hit hard with a cold rain. I opted to take a backroad home near Lake Castaic, as it would keep me far enough north to avoid the brunt of the storm. Daylight is now fading as I enter the mountains again.

The ride at elevation was super foggy and a bit misty but was OK. I followed a dude towing his sport bike back from the Streets of Willow. It wasn’t until Burbank that I hit the real rain. This was fine by me as it meant just 20 minutes to home and the rain was a non issue, other then having to wipe off my visor every 4 seconds.

Here are the 3 day GPS tracks, different color for each day. It was a grand total of 846 miles.

    One more LA-B-to-V story.

This one's about an adventure bike rider that dared to ride through Red Rock Canyon on his heavy bike with a girl following him on her Husqvarna 310 and the result:

Very entertaining and well written with photos. (The scooter guys play a part in this story as well.)
