Several of us escaped the Texas heat the end of august and spent some time in Lake City. We rented a house just off Lake San Cristobal and roughed it. No camping this trip. It was mostly dual sport action although a couple riders brought their larger ADV machines to enjoy some of the awesome twisty roads in the area. The weather couldn't have been better the whole week with 70's/40's no wind or rain!

The fun started for me in South Fork. Highway 149 is just awesome.

After that Pass it was all “downhill” to Lake City. I was going 45 after a sharp curve and a bicycle blew by me!
The town was such a great surprise. Any kind of off-road conveyance could be found. MTB’s to Monster trucks. SxS’s proliferate though.

Our first day of riding was in the Blue Mesa area on the way to Gunnison. Blue Mesa road was a real treat.

The road was an old rail bed.

Day two was up Alpine road to the Alpine plateau and Soldiers Summit.

Break time at the top. This road was even better than the day before.

We were in awe of the green meadow at the end.

When we stopped for our break we noticed our one and only flat for the week.

It was on the front so it should be easy right? Once we started we realized that out of all our kits we were missing one crucial tool. Guess what?

    Adjustments.jpg

Closest we could come was a couple cheesy open end wrenches and my metric adjustable wrench. The shop mounted his rim and torqued the hell out of the pinch bolts. No go. Off to get the Motovan.

The next day it was Cinnamon Pass. All we had to do was pull out of our house on CR-30 and up we go. Very busy road being the Alpine Loop.

Off to Animas Forks. Packed with tourists on a week day but well worth it.

We could barely breathe. I couldn’t believe it. About 12000’ I guess.

Fortunately a Ranger came along and helped us out. He was pulling over SxS’s as quick as he could to check registration. Real nice guy. What a job!

Did I mention that our house was six feet off the South Fork of the Gunnison River?

It was much better than restaurants (or campfires).

We went around Lake San Cristobal every day and it looked like glass. I could have easily spent a couple days on it.

Wow! Looks like a great time, I love Lake City!

I hesitate to tell too many people about it, but genuinely wish the area to stay just like it is.

Every time I have been there, the Sheriff has someone pulled over......and I mean EVERY TIME.

There’s a split in the road, CR27 to Gunnison or Los Pinos Pass. Really cool free campground there, I believe it’s actually Cathedral.

I don't remember seeing any LEO's at all besides the Ranger. That town is gagged on the weekends!

my first visit to Lake City was in about 1958. The highway from South Fork to Creede was gravel, from there to Lake City was dirt. Nice country. Spent a lot of time there in the mid to late '70's, Last visited in about 1996.

Look like a fantastic trip @Mudclod! I haven't been that far east yet and really want to ride CO; pretty cool to have a house like that for base and be able to ride from there. How many days/nights did you hang out? And how many miles did you guys typically do each day?

Laughed at the bunny shot, and really cool shot of the generations of guys working the wildlife scene out there. How'd the WR handle the elevation - did you struggle getting up anything at elevation?

Appreciate you taking the time to craft and post the report, great pics and looks like a seriously awesome escape.

Thanks. We split the house five ways and including food it was less than $500 each for seven days/nights. Did I mention we ate really well? :dukegirl The WR and I both struggled to breathe. I thought FI would be better than that. I would be surprised if we rode 100 miles a day. Lot's of stopping to enjoy the views. I would have prefered more single track.

Did I mention how fun the street riding is there too.

yes it was. I've also driven Slumgullion in late December. Had to drive around the "pass closed" sign, but saw a lot of Elk.
