Highly recommend passing through North Adams in Massachusetts; northern Berkshires, border of Vermont area. Great brew pub, history, and views.
Climb Mt Graylock right outside; awesome road. 360 degree views (and a restaurant) at the top
From Lake Placid, consider riding north to Plattsburgh and catching the ferry to South Hero Island, VT. It's a short ride to the college town of Burlington. Plenty of good food and pretty girls to appreciate. From there, you can make your way to Cambridge, VT and ride Hwy. 108 (Smugglers Notch) which is spectacular.
Hwy. 108 ends at Hwy. 100 in Stowe, VT. If you like country stores, the Cold Hollow Cider Mill is worth a stop. Just down the road from there is the Ben & Jerry's Factory.
Go south towards I-89 and decide on a route towards New Hampshire.
In New Hampshire the Kankamagus Highway (112) from Lincoln, NH to Conway, NH is a great ride. Watch out for bear! had a yearling run out this past May when I was passing through. Luckily he changed his mind and ran back into the woods. They're are plenty of places to stay in North Conway, NH as it's a White Mountain tourist destination.
From Conway, I would just ride Hwy. 302 into Portland. It's the most direct route and its pretty scenic.
There's an Irish pub in Portland (Ri' Ra') that has a nice view of the Harbor in the upstairs dining room.
In North Conway, NH I stayed at the Green Granite Inn. Friendly staff, clean and reasonably priced. They let me park on the patio in front of my room!
highway 302 versus 113 down to highway 25? whatever is more scenic, smooth and curvy. Tell me
Spoke with a friend yesterday who is from the area. He said either road is a good choice. 302 is quicker and still scenic. Check for road construction before you leave Conway, that may influence your decision. I road 302 last May and it was a combination of forests and lakes.
When are you doing this trip?? I might be doing the same trip but from the aforementioned Cambridge location....this weekend.
Hurricane Mountain Road, Bear Notch Road, Kankamagus, Whitehorse Gear store, Mt Washington auto road all good. Stop for a swim in a river or lake, lots to choose from, as well as good country stores.
