I’m already breaking the law. The last thing I want to do is run.

The last time a cop pulled me over (a couple years ago), he rolled down his window as he passed and said “are you going to stop or run away”. I said I would stop and pulled over. Took off my helmet. He saw my gray hair and gray stubble and said “kids do stupid things. Stay safe”. I got lucky.

    That was my experience too.

Cop saw me (he was coming the other way) honking along at well over the posted speed limit on a mtn road in CO and flipped on the lights

I saw the cop flip on the lights and turn around

I pulled in to the next safe pullout and waited with the helmet off and the ignition off.

I'm guessing the grey hair, the full gear, the geezer-mobile (R-RT), and the waiting for him got me the warning

That's quite a different situation than a cop just flipping on the lights after you passed him.

Good for you! Fear (or lack of) has nothing to do with it.

I did not see you lane split on the specific backup I referenced earlier in this thread (which occurred about 13 or 14 years or so ago). No matter. Glad you survived whatever deeds you did, & peace be with you; wherever that is.

you might outrun the cop in traffic, but it's not simple to out-run a radio,...

I worked with a guy who knew all about what cops can't do.

Last time I saw him he was leaving work in handcuffs.

That depends on where you are.

Get to New Mexico where its entirely possible there is only one cop for 200 square miles. Yeah you can't outrun a radio, but odds are there is no one to intercept you.

    of course.
but not really relevant, since if that's where you are, you're probably not dealing with traffic that a cop could be stuck in to start with.

Of course, but they still have to prove that you saw the lights if they want to get you for evasion.

Accident on 380/ University Drive today, backup clearly visible from a long way away. Enough that cars were making a u turn and finding alternate routes. I was getting ready to do exactly that when I remembered "dude, you're on a bike." yep. Lane split. Even got waved through.

    Corrected for accuracy.

Displaying their lights and sounding the siren fall under should have seen as drivers are required to watch for, and yield to emergency vehicles displaying lights and sounding sirens.

Most cops I've seen don't use the siren for traffic stops right away, and if they don't use it immediately in a splitting situation, the motorcyclist will be too far ahead to know that it was meant for them.

I got pulled over a couple months ago, and I didn't know he was behind me until he blipped the siren. The mirrors on most motorcycles suck, plus helmets and earplugs (unless you hate being able to hear). Most cops around here that I've interacted with understand this stuff.

Look, I've got huge respect for cops, but in the situation I first responded to, they're not going to be able to get you on evasion. Sure they could radio ahead or mail you a ticket for the splitting, but you'd have to have a fence post for an attorney to get nailed for evasion. It would probably be pretty easy to beat it without one, but for that kind of violation, the attorney would be worth it.

Recently, filtered past stand still traffic to the front of were an accident was the cops came out of there way to ask me what the hell I thought I was doing and that if I didn't turn around and head back I would get a citation. Still will filter in traffic. The heat in full gear is not enjoyable.
