My stellar paint and body guru, Dean Miyauchi, dropped of the fist parts back from fill, sand, primer, wet sand, primer, wet sand, color coat, wet sand, color coat, wet sand, color coat buff and clear coat today. There are three fenders in the photos, so it must be parts for a sidecar! One gloss Storm Metallic Black custom steel front fender, actually fabricated on an English Wheel in Holland, the stock rear fender with factory pinstriping, and an LBS fiberglass fender with Dean's pinstriping to match:

As we wait on the body, we've removed parts to remove the factory front brake line, and install our own braided stainless Goodridge brake line, fabricated in-house. In the drive for clean simplicity, the oil filler is located UNDER the cylinder head cover, and just to make things more difficult for those who do their own work, and drive up the labor cost for those who don't, to replace the air filter, the fuel tank has to be removed, a flimsy right-angle PLASTIC fuel disconnect has to be released, you have to remove the BMW roundel on the front engine cover, remove the Torx bolts retaining it, tilt it forward, remove the upper left and right engine shrouds, two plastic air intake ducts, then take off the top of the airbox:

Though we have yet to fully install the front brake line and bleed the system, our leading link kit is installed. The aforementioned custom steel fender, fender stays, trail-adjustable link, Italian-made BIBUTO twinshock set with silver bodies and black springs, German-made STABILUS linear steering damper:

Another view of Ad Donker's top-shelf design, fabrication and workmanship:

Painted body will be delivered next week. We need to install the trunk lid, tilt-forward windshield deck and windshield valance so Dean can align all components for pinstriping. The complete body has to be assembled so Dean can run pinstriping across different body parts and have it all aligned. Pin striping will be done in-house, and we'll invite our client, Dave, in for a consult and observation as it is done:

Mike you are having just too much fun in your "retirement"! :ricky

That air filter reminds me of the K1200LT. My buddy @szurszewski tells me that if you had visited the production line in Spandau and went all the way to the start you'll find the air filter hanging there by a thin nylon thread waiting for the rest of the bike to be built around it.

What is the rear track measurement, if you don't mind? It does look wide. (My Harley with Lak sidecar frame is 54" center to center.)

Now the hard part, let the wiring begin!:

    20210502_boxer_01.jpg

No wiring information is available. No company (that I know of) has a CANbus gateway or interface controller available. But Mac has a plan, and it all tested out OK, so diving into a little wiring yoga, the R18 itself is being pre-wired to inteface to the sidecar:

    20210502_boxer_02.jpg

A successful pre-wire! We've put the R18 back together, and can show off a re-assembled rolling chassis highlighting the awesome paint job and subtle pin-striping:

Wouldn't it be great to have that rig ready in time to show it off at the BMWMOA Rally in Great Falls six weeks from now. It's really something! Wow. :rayof

Seeing this and the other builds progressing I am oh so tempted to go pay a visit to LBS NL across the border (checked, it is only 215 kms for here) to talk about building a rig ... good thing we still have some travel restrictions in place.

Beautiful workmanship from LBS NL and LBS US!
