In Virginia, Vanity plates are almost free and really, really easy to get. It's all done online. That's probably why we have more vanity plates per vehicle than any other state.

I seriously doubt that Virginia has more vanity plates than California.

Does anybody know of a web site that shows the numbers per state? I remember reading once that California has over 1.5 million of them.

I just checked the California online ordering site and noticed that the price has gone up from $41 to $49 to get a regular plate - you get to pay extra for different backgrounds. How cheap are they in Virginia?

I once saw two pretty young women in a Pontiac Vibe with the Virginia vanity plate RATOR. It took me a few minutes to get it...then I almost crashed laughing!

Since someone brought this thread back to life, I have to relate that I'm pretty sure my plate got me a warning last night instead of a ticket. I had just turned a corner in a 35 mph zone and the next light half a block away turned yellow at the point where I could only make it by accelerating hard to get through it. I beat the car in the other lane to the far side, even though he entered the intersection before me. So while I was already going a bit fast I kept the throttle on for the right-hand sweeper just down the road that feels so good at close to double the limit. I always let off of the throttle at that point and get close to the speed limit again before passing the next street, but by then I could see some red and blue lights behind me. "Crap! I'm not going to get out of this one."

Even though the police car was nearly a block back, I pulled over immediately in a safe spot for both me and a police cruiser parked behind me. I already had it on the sidestand with the engine off and was removing gloves and helmet when they pulled to a stop behind me. I thought for sure it would be an expensive ticket, but my theory is that with a plate that says GRAMMPA on it and showing them right away that I have gray hair gives me a better chance of a warning. The two officers didn't tell me anything about what sort of a ticket I was going to get as I got my driver's license, insurance, and registration out. Then they spent what seemed like a long time behind their car writing me up. I was wondering how bad it was going to be when they came back and I could see "Courtesy Citation" on the top of their form - so I was thinking "Oh wow! I slipped out of another ticket". I thanked them and promised to behave myself in the future.

I'm convinced that if I had a plate like 2FAST4U or something I would have had an expensive ticket.

The plate is the one in this photo, but now it's on the KTM. (And please don't ask about what's happening in that photo.)
