Relatively speaking, I'm a fairly old dude now. This house has sat empty as long as I can remember, for sure over fifty years, and probably longer. It has been the subject of photography students over the years, and a source of wonderment for others -- as in, "I wonder why that is still here?"

Recently, the county has tried to make the owner tear it down. He is resisting that because it was his childhood home. I believe he was born in the house and it holds lots of memories for him from his younger days.

For many years, the windows and doors have been open holes, letting in the weather and the animals. The county was going to condemn it on that basis. Earlier this year, I had to do a double take as I was passing by the old place. It suddenly had windows again. Sure, they were only cheap, aluminum storm windows, but windows just the same. Turns out it was the owner's way to stop the condemnation process. You want windows? I'll give you windows.

He also added doors and a corrugated metal roof.

Just to stick his thumb in their eyes, he added a huge pediment over the front door.

I was riding by there one day as a guy was putting on part of the roof. It was risky business. The wood wasn't solid enough to hold the nails, and the new roof was soon scattered across the nearby fields.

So, today as I was out motoring around on the R90/6, there was a new addition to the picture.

    Ruh Roh:

It looks like the county may be about to prevail. I mean, it isn't a Caterpillar hoe, but even a Case could wreak some havoc here. At this point, it won't take much:

I'll miss the place if it goes. It has been a landmark all my life. I guess you can't stand in the way of progress.

Today was a nice, but very windy day out there on the prairie:

    {Edit} Two days later on a different bike . . .

The hoe is off the trailer and has crept closer to the house. It's like a bad Stephen King movie in slo-mo. :lol3

{2nd Edit} Three more days later, on yet another different bike . . .

We were gone all day yesterday, and I had a feeling the old house would be gone when we got back. It was. Sure enough, after all these years, I had missed seeing it go down. I went out today and got the picture with the Harley.

I think there is some more yet to come with this story. If the rubble was to be hauled away, they surely would have loaded it onto trucks while the hoe was still on-site. The hoe is nowhere to be seen, which tells me they probably have a fire planned. That would not bode well for those old trees, but maybe they want them gone as well. That would make it easier to farm the ground there. This all could upset the equilibrium of the universe -- at least around here.

I hope it bc works out but it's a good story.

Cool pick. The contrast of the shades of green in the meadow helps make the picture.
