There's cheap (if not free) public transit to Banff if you want to see the town.
Oh! Cool! Thanks!
The no refund thing is BS in a 100% occupancy season. They had that cabin in Jasper rebooked in 5 minutes with the next phone call.
Hey, you’re still on a motorcycle in beautiful country! I’m jealous!!
It IS really pretty here.
Highway 40 south from Rt 1 is a beautiful ride (pavement). The interchange is about 12 miles east of Canmore.
Also, just wanted to say that I think Jasper is far more beautiful than Banff and worth the trip. Especially a side trip to Maligne Lake. The geology is awesome.
As soon as I get the bike ok’d that’s where I’m headed. Thanks for the geology heads up!
Having a reeeally late breakfast this morning, and lots of coffee! Didn’t sleep very well last night, too much sitting around finishing a book. Bike shop opens tomorrow at 10, I left a really confusing/ditzy message on the poor guy’s phone...
There’s some sort of geoscience museum in town, going to check that out. Apparently this was a coal mining area. I’ll have to take the bike, but it isn’t very far and I’m curious to hear/feel it again because after pushing and prodding the chain around yesterday it stopped feeling so awful. Huh. Still way too loose still. See what the guy says tomorrow.
Believe it or not, Canmore was a coal mining and railroad town unitl 1987 or so.
Development for the 88 Olympics instigated the change to an uber expensive resort town.
In Jasper, if taking a side trip to Maligne Lake (you should), on the way just minutes from town you happen upon Maligne Canyon. It's worth a stop but the reason I mention it is across the road is a hostel. Also, a side trip up to Miette Hot Springs is a must. They have cabins up there as well.
Saw some real estate prices. Ouch.
My wife has a sister who moved there in the early 90s and bought a lot soon after.
They built their house using largely volunteer family labour around the turn of the century.
I can only imagine what they could sell it for now.
I don't know if I could afford their property tax.
A sub 500 square foot 1 bath/bedroom condo was going for the mid 400s. I think it said the property taxes were about 2300
Hey there Sue.. lots of fun reading along. Safe travels!
Why cancel it there is no refund?
If people could cancel bookings at the last minute in high occupancy venues without penalty the reservation system would be a mess.
After breakfast I rode over to the museum, bike doesn’t feel too good again. The little museum is nice and you can easily spend an hour or so. Not a ton of geology, but a little of everything having to do with the town and a nice set of short videos about restoring bison to Banff National Park in 2017. About a block away is the main tourist/shopping street so I wandered up and down a bit, got an ice cream. Caramel and chocolate ice cream with more caramel and some caramel candy. I really like caramel. Back to the room and read for most of the afternoon, did some sink laundry, ordered room service, pretty much was amazingly lazy.
Tomorrow is the bike shop, I really hope he has time tomorrow to help me out.
