So, can't you try adjusting the chain a bit? They usually don't just go from all good to all bad. There's a whole bunch of bike shops in the Okanagan Valley in BC. Surely you could head that way without issue.

Fortunately there’s a bike shop here in town with good ratings online. I’ll be honest, I don’t think I’m strong enough to adjust the chain without having the bike on a block and I don’t have a center stand. Shop opens in 2 hours, we’ll see what he says.

Got to the shop, they won’t be able to get it back to tomorrow which I think is pretty darn good given they have a 3 week backlog right now. Summit Motorsports if you’re in Canmore.

So I’m back at the same hotel waiting for a room to get clean...

There is nothing under $200 here except for the youth hostel, ouch. Oh well. Today would be a good day to take the bus to Banff if I can get into a room fairly soon and dump my stuff and change out of my riding gear.

Best of luck. The hostels in both Banff and Lake Louise are like luxury hotels. Both offer private rooms and have dining facilities.

Banff has two hot springs: Sulphur Mtn. (Upper Hot Springs) and Cave and Basin.

I’m going to stay in Canmore, but I think I might take the bus to Banff for something to do.

OK, bike back, chain adjusted cleaned and lubed. Death rattle is gone. Told him I was going to Alaska on that chain and he said fine.

However, I’m still stuck in Canmore tonight because I checked in. Argh. And it’s a beautiful day. Going to get sout me lunch and ride to Banff.

Excellent. Stroll Banff Avenue for ice cream and hit one of the hot spring pools. There's also a condola that goes up Sulphur Mountain offering a commanding view of the whole valley and surrounding range. There's food and drink up there as well.

Sitting on a patio eating key lime pie and people watching. Overweight woman across the street with these enormous nipples and perky! No woman her weight and age should be owning those...either surgery or really good genetics..

When one can note nipples across the street you know you're dealing with a gift - or no jacket in January.

My mother has a winter place in Florida so our family is very familiar with good Key Lime baking.

So I think this is the plan for the next few days. Ride Icefields tomorrow and stay in Hinton. Ride to Dawson Creek and overnight. Ride to Fort Nelson and overnight. Ride to Muncho Lake for 2 nights and spend a good part of the day at Liard Hot Springs.

Sounds perfect. Hinton will be cheaper than Jasper for sure and it's still a pretty location. I gather Grande Cache/Grande Prairie is the route north? Beautiful country. Watch for bears. They've been known to frolic on the pool decks at Liard as well. :lurk

Saving some money some places, not so much at Muncho Lake, oh well...

Yeah, I’ve read about that awful bear attack at Liard Hot Springs, yikes!

A couple years ago a bear sauntered up to a 24 hr supermarket in Peace River and the power door at 2 am just opened for his shopping and browsing convenience. He had quite a party in the bakery with cakes and pies before police and wildlife people arrived. He never made it to the meat counter. They trucked him back out into the woods. Life in the north.

Don't miss Maligne Lake Rd. P1000699e.JPG

Definitely worth the drive up to the lake and back.

Moraine Lake (near Lake Louise) was once on the back of the Canadian $20. bill.
