    Good Morning,
in two days a couple of friends and me will ride southwards into the Tunesian desert. We've been there a couple of times, but this time we'll take the chance to make a little movie about riding this part of North Africa.

To warm up I had a look in my pics and found some, which I thought you might enjoy before we have the movie ready to run.

    Here we go:

Col de Haddeche, on the way to the oasis of Douz, the town we're heading to.

    500k's to cover to Douz.

At our arrival in Douz the old Airhead asks for a first service.

    Getting familiar with the sand.

First ride out to a cafe in the desert. Dropped the bike once because I was too slow

This small thing takes the sand much easier than our hightech stuff.

Meeting with some other riders in the Cafe.

    Market day in Douz.

Local chemist on the market. Need any medication?

To leave the town you need to ride through vast palm plantations.

HP2 is easy to ride, isn't it?

Let's see what this baby can do.

And now let's see what the rider can take :D

End of part one. Part two to follow.

Hope you felt a bit entertained.

    Here's part two:

Almost everybody who rides a bike to Tunesia wants to go to the oasis of Ksar Ghilane. There are two ways to go there. First is to follow a track that was made to maintain the pipeline running south to the Algerian border. Second is the way through the dunes. We made our choice: The dunes. That will be about 130 kilometers, depending on how far we come off the straight line.

In order to be well prepared we did some training in the sand near Douz.

    How to jump ...

... and how better not to.

Though the bikes are excellent if you ride them with speed it's very easy to get stuck in the soft sand on top of a dune.

    Ok, enough triaining for today.

Tomorrow we'll ride a 50 Kilo trip to the foot of some dunes which are famous for their desert roses.

Starting the day with a proper haircut and then ...

... head towards the desert roses.

So this is the place. We're not to exhausted but we easily dig the bikes. It's all about speed. Speed at the right time.

Because this is not the place where we want to cross the dunes we just surf a bit in the dunes.

We spent a bit too much time at the desert roses. It becomes already dark when we're on our way back to Douz. Sun is setting to fast which means we'll have to ride the sandy track in the dark. Did I mentinon that I hate riding offroad in the dark?

Thank good nothing severe happened on our way back. Only the digged in bikes gave us a hart time. Hope we're doing better on the way to Ksar Ghilane.

See you agin in part three.

    Cheers

Maybe not everybody who is interested in desert riding got my report about Tunisia because of the stupid title I gave it: What I did last Xmas
Beware: lots of pictures, takes some time to load.

Just read your report. What a cool ride!!! We didn't intend to go to El Borma and Bordj al Khadra, but after watching your pictures I'm sure we have to think about it!

    Auf bald!
