In the hopes of getting some warmer weather again, anybody have tracks (or directions) to get to some dirt w/in 60 miles or so of DC? Dirt roads are good, something less improved would be even better. Trying to get some dirt time in on the new bike and, um, dirty up my cherry.

I'm hoping to find something closer than GWNF, but any info is good info.

    Thanks.

Someone on here posted a Google earth file with all the gravel roads listed in Loudoun County, VA. I love dirt roads too but currently only have a sport bike, but i don't care. I still hit the dirt/gravel roads.

Thanks for the reply. I had looked through the whole East section and didn't see that, but it may have had a title that led me to skip it. I'll check again - a bit more closely. Gravel in Loudoun is great for starters.

I downloaded the file(s) you are looking for earlier this month but like you can't find the original post but I will email it to you if you PM me your email address.

I don't think there's any public dirt (dirt roads aren't "dirt" imho) within 60 miles of DC. The closest public trails are probably at Tasker's Gap (which IIRC is about 80-100 miles from DC). Budd's Creek used to run a lot of harescrambles, I know they quite at one point, not sure if they are doing it again, but entering a HS race is a great way to get in some excelent trail riding. I know they are still doing plenty of amature MX but a DRZ isn't really the ride for that.

I am really hoping to try my hand at some mild single track. It's hard enough to find good mountain biking near DC, much less somewhere a motorcycle could go. I might just have to wait until Spring and find something in GWNF.

    Jason,

Thanks a lot for that info. I've been looking to exchange ride info for years. I had never heard of that site before. I'm in Annapolis.

Try Middleburg VA, there is a few dirt roads with water crossings. I think is 629 and 628. There is a few more around the area.

    Good luck!

I have been out riding looking for dirt (gravel) roads quite a bit recently. Loudon, Fauquier, Culpeper and Rappahannock Counties all have a fair amount of gravel roads. I think the closest gravel roads I have found are in the Aldie area. I haven't been looking in MD at all but would like to explore back roads there.

For offroad trails, there is also The Cove (http://motocove.com) that is past Winchester near Gore, VA. A similar distance to Tasker's Gap for me. I haven't been there yet, but have heard good things about it. Will be checking it out this weekend on my XR650L.

I live in Loudoun so ride around on the dirt/gravel roads quite a bit. Bull Run Mountain Road and area is pretty nice too - in Faquier County? Couple of videos below of the local roads/water crossings (1st video was right after some heavy rains, usually not even close to this deep).

Video from The Cove in Gore, VA today - I don't think there was a speck of dirt, just miles and miles of rocks! At least for me the XR650L was just too big for these trails - I would have struggled on my woods bike too though, so maybe it's the rider that's the problem! :D

I found a great dirt road in the Catoctan Mts. a while back. I think I recorded a stream crossing on the GPS. If so I'll post it when I find it.

From what I remember, it was quite long. I have wanted to go back and find more dirt roads in the area, but seem to always find higher priority rides.
