Where does this route start and finish? I will be riding through in a few weeks and that sounds like good option

    Thanks

    Route begins: (north)

At crest of Berry Summit on Highway 299. The road is Titlow Hill, which turns to USFS FH1 further south.

Route ends: (south end... has two endpoints depending on which fork you choose.)

    1) At crest of South Fork Mtn summit on Hwy 36. (left fork headed south)
    2) Near Mad River Bridge on Hwy 36. (Right fork headed south, about 1 mile upstream from Mad River Burger Bar)

Alternative exit from FH1 into Hyampom.

Take FH40 (Pelletreau Ridge) road down to Hyampom.

Hyampom has some routes out: FH60 to 299 at Burnt Ranch (paved), Indian Valley to Hwy 36 (gravel), Hyampom Road to Hayfork on Hwy 3 (paved), South Fork Road turns to Sims Mtn road and connects to Ammon Ridge road (gravel/dirt).

Nice campground in Hyampom. Gas at store.

Might try that in a couple of weeks from 36 to 299 heading North on my way to Gold Bluffs Beach/Fern Canyon for some camping.

Explored lots around Titlow Hill/Horse Mountain in my HSU days. The old ski lodge was still there, it burned down years ago. Lots of good times.

Funny you revived this thread. I had planned to today but I had to run out the door before I could! I'm actually planning to ride up from Santa Cruz for four days on my XR400. I was hoping I could talk one of you local yokels into riding around with me up there next week. Here is the route, deviation is happily accepted with guidance...

Any current road conditions for Usal? I see it is open, but wondering if anyone has ridden lately and comment. I am headed through there on Tuesday on my Wee and was debating on riding this road along the way.

    Thanks!

Was up there last week, you should be fine on the wee, just don't load it down too much and don't go too fast.

    Hello all.
I am from Washington and will be riding from Wenatchee to Lake Arrowhead Ca... and back.
I plan on doing the Lost Coast in the south direction on my BMW 658 twin.
I will be staying in Eureka and then heading south, around sept 20-22 through Lost Coast.
I have to make it through in a day (with stops for food & drink), then heading south on 1 to 128 & cut across.
Studying my maps... After 211 & then onto Mattole rd and south through Honeydew, is Kings Peak the best way into Shelter Cove? Or is Ettersburg through Thorn Junction more appropriate?
Is White Thorn a place to see?
Of course Usal rd the rest of the way south to 1.
How much of that is dirt? Or pavement?
    Been dry through there?
Is there gas on this route?
Is Eureka, through the Lost Coast, down 1 & cutting across 128 to 101 doable in a day?
I have a solo trip with a big ass party in Lake Arrowhead which gives me a return up 395, Ebbits pass through Downieville and down over to Chico! Whew
    Leaving next Wednesday...

Thank you for any input and advice!

    Cheers

    >"Studying my maps... After 211 & then onto Mattole rd and south through Honeydew, is Kings Peak the best way into Shelter Cove? Or is Ettersburg through Thorn Junction more appropriate?"

If alone. I'd turn south at Honeydew... and just follow the Ettersburg road to the Shelter Cove road. The Kings peak is 100% dirt, with a couple challenging sections and a couple ways to get lost. Note that the Ettersburg road does have about 1 mile of dirt in the middle.

    >"Is White Thorn a place to see?"

Nope. Just a wide spot on the road. Dope growers mostly.
What I'd do is take Chemise mountain road south from Shelter Cove road. It will take you straight to 'Four Corners'. 4 Corners has the Usal Road (south), and Sinkyone State Park (west)... (east) you will head to Whitethorn and back to Garberville... and (north) is the Chemise Mountan road.

    >"Of course Usal rd the rest of the way south to 1.
How much of that is dirt? Or pavement?"

Usal is 100% dirt, from the 'Four Corners' junction until you hit Hwy 1.
I think it is 25 miles from Four Corners to the Usal beach.

    >"Been dry through there?"

Well, so far! Don't see any major precip before your trip.

    >"Is there gas on this route?"

Sort of. Gas up in Eureka.
Next gas, turn west on Shelter Cove road (that's at the end of Ettersburg road) and head to Shelter Cove. On the downhill side of the hill toward the ocean, there is a market on the south side... which has gas pumps. If you stay with your planned route, next gas will be in Ft. Bragg.

While you're near Shelter Cove, might as well head down in there and have a look around. Turn south at the bottom (there is a 'ring' access road), the little market next to the boat launch has some pretty good fish and chips.

"Is Eureka, through the Lost Coast, down 1 & cutting across 128 to 101 doable in a day? "

    Yes. Absolutely.

Typical late summer conditions... probably gonna ride that way tomorrow, to avoid the deer hunters east of 101.

As usual Twilight is right on the money for this area. Wanted to point out that Chemise Mt. Road is @ 1-2 miles east of Shelter Cove ( keep your eyes peeled) , and I would highly recommend going into the Sinyone at 4 corners. It's about 10 miles down to the end ( trail head there for Usal) . You stand a real good chance of seeing Elk and some great views of the ocean. :D
