    ICN to BKK last night

BKK to Chiang Mai this morning.

When i booked this flight I was a little miffed that I had to pay extra for a seat assignment, but since I was paying extra I splurged and got the extra legroom seats up front. Cost $4 usd.

Turns out it's 1st class seating.

    Score

Day 1 - Picking up the bike in Chiang Mai

Flew from BKK to CNX in the morning.

My first surprise was how many westerners were on the flight - probably close to 50pct. Having spent the previous week in rural Korea, it was strange to see so many foreigners.

You could see the terrain change from flat + agricultural around Bangkok to hilly and forested as the plane flew north.

The Grab taxi app wasn't working for me so I had to pay full price (about $5) for a taxi ride to Riders Corner. The cabbie was a nice guy, and drove surprisingly sane too. Everyone else on the road seemed to be sane and courteous as well.

I was confused by all the sanity.

Made it to Riders Corner and hung out with Ian and his wife (I'm embarrassed but I have no idea how to spell her name) and met a bunch of Aussie and Brit expats as they came and went throughout the early afternoon. Also met the new puppy:

Ian set me up with a CB500X for the week. Top box, usb charger, and ram ball were already on the bike ready to go. There it is in the background:

Day 1- 1st stop: The Mall

    I needed some socks.

Ian sent me to off towards the local mall, where I found all sorts of socks that definitely wouldn't fit.

BUT one little mom + pop (and ~7 year old daughter) shop had some larger socks that looked good. I was doing the usual pointing and hand signals thing to indicate that I would like to purchase them and the 7 year old daughter stepped in and took over the transaction. She walked up and told me the price (4 for 100bhat) and made change out of the register. She was proud and her parents were simply beaming with pride, it was really fun.

    Great success:

Hopped back on the bike and tooled around town, wearing NGNTT (except a helmet). It's November, its just before dusk, and it's still 33 degrees out with a heat index of 37 degrees C = 98 degrees F.

    Screenshot_20191116-170738.jpg

    Screenshot_20191116-170802.jpg

I'm used to heat w/o humidity, or humidity w/o heat, but not both together.

    Holy ball sweat.

Anyways, check out the city. The square in the middle is the old town, surrounded by a wall and a moat.

    Screenshot_20191117-073530.jpg

Inside the old city itis very touristy, outside of the moat it gets very authentic very quickly.

There are a bunch of Brits here. One of them brought a Mini:

Since I'm a 'real' adventurer I wanted to eat with the locals, so I cruised around looking for a restaurant.

I found a bunch of properly sketchy looking restaurants, but my scooby senses warned me off due to perceived sanitation issues. Note: my scooby senses failed me spectacularly a couple of years ago in Vietnam, resulting in the most spectacularly horrible travelers diarrhea... while on an airplane between Saigon and DaNang. It was not a pleasant flight for me, or the stewardesses, or the passengers in the back of the plane, and definitely not for the ground crew. Anyways, enough pooh talk, I'm a bit gun shy these days for obvious reasons....

Anyways I went to the Saturday night market outside of the south gate and walked around and ate there. Check out the wiring:

Following along. Enjoy the ride. Tum is the correct spelling for my wife's name, although I used to spell it Toom. Like most Thai women, it's her nickname. Her real name, never used, is Sudjai

Enjoy! The weather is turning cooler and it is a perfect time to ride here! Loads of options I'm sure @The Bigfella can tell you. Samueng Loop, Mea Hong Son (up and over Doi Inthanon clockwise, back through Wat Chan), and of course Nan and endless looping roads... Have fun!

    (Back to Saturday)

The night market was pretty big and had a ton of food options.

Had pork dumplings, shrimp wontons, fried squid, and pad thai.

Since I'm such a party animal I headed back to the hotel and fell asleep... at 830 or so.

Day 2 - Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son

Started the day with an awesome hotel breakfast:

    (I didn't drink the water)

1 week of clothing + toiletries + tools fits nicely in the helmet bag, which itself fits nicely in the top box:

Headed south out of town, then the long way to Doi Inthanon National Park.

Well that's something that I don't see every day:

Tried to find a good spot to take a picture of the valley, juat found some 2 track instead:

Check out the giant waterfall in the background:

There was very little traffic on the back route to the park, then a ton of traffic once inside.

    Keeway 200:

Headed down to the temple but there were a ton of people there, and I was running late, so I decided to skip it. Did take a photo of the cool steel decking that they used to build the parking lot:
