Looking for inmates for an early spring ride down the MABDR. I'm planning on being packed and ready to go early March as soon as a weather window looks favorable. At the end of the MABDR I plan to jump over to the SmokeyMTN1000 loop to Tellico Plains . I have my Garmin Zumo xt loaded with so many tracks it crazy, hoping to hit some of the best. Full camp gear but will hotel as much as possible when necessary. Ill be riding my 2015 Honda CRF 250L. Its fully moded and I've done 2500Miles camping the northeast the last 2 years. Love the little bike.

That may be a bit of a challenge since many of the state forest access roads that make up the MABDR are gated and locked until well after the spring thaw. Late April for some of them last year if I recall correctly.

Better to check in and plan accordingly, right?

I was planning a mabdr this year on my 250L, but I’d be riding south to north. I assume your going the opposite direction?

I do a lot of logging roads and back country trails, one da its clear and the next Ill have to turnaround because of blow down. Most of the time i can clear the trail or go around a bit but sometimes I have to cut my way through. Im hoping the MABDR will be open and clear in early April

Ah cool. I understand. I carry a saw and it's come in handy more than once.
When someone mentioned gates being closed you said you carry an axe and saw. I wasn't sure what your plans were lol.

Are you going in early March or early April? @soberjoe said the gates were closed last year until late April. I'm thinking about going 1st week in April but probably from Gettysburg south. Who knows? It's all weather dependent.

I an interested in doing a spring ride, but have no interest in riding in the mud, and based on our winter up north I am guessing it's going to be pretty wet into May.

I rode it north to south a couple of years ago in late May and there was absolutely ZERO shortage of mud! In one place there was basically a river running right down the middle of the road. Between snow melt and spring rains you are going to see plenty of mud. There were also about twice the expected number of water crossings due to seasonal creeks being "in season".

Has anyone contacted anybody about when the roads will be open this year yet?

Wow still there. I would think without the leaves that would be melting quicker. Turn up the thermostat a bit or throw another log on!

So when’s the ideal time to avoid the mud and the summer heat? Juneish or September?

Step up your sleeping bag quality!
Nothing like a crisp mountain morning, smoldering fire and hot coffee.
