Leaving Crooked River camp my odometer read 4,631 trail miles completed. Followed the scenic Crooked River Road for a time and then dove into sandy, dusty narrow track. A section of OHV woopdi doos coming in succession. Powderpuff dust and red cinder surfaces Through dry pines and Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Lunch and gas in La Pine. Mexican again except Mike. His Africa Twin wanted a sandwich. A quick grocery stop and we rolled on to Crescent City. Land is looking more water nourished and fir trees. We are into the central Cascades.
We end the day with gas and snacks at Dry Creek store where they come out to unlock the pumps and record the amount. A mile down the road we pitch tents at Horseshoe Bend NF CG on the N Umpqua River.

Tom on his KTM 690 and young whipper snapper Joseph on his venerable DR 650 were seeking adventure on a red hill climb section. Joe, (BMW 900) Mike,(Africa Twin) and my DR 650 took blue and green. At some point I lost the other two and did a few re-do’s till I got a reroute sorted. And arrived at Cow Creek gas and lunch behind them.
I’m eating fish and chips and telling some trail tail when someone slaps me on the shoulder and says, “is he telling lies again “!
So there stands Bill. He has a Budget rental truck outside. Returning from Eugene with it he sported our location on Spotwalla and dropped in on us. He had fast tracked it out of Moab behind me, to Salt Lake City, then westward to GPSKevin Nevada route and on to Port Orford ahead of us. His truck will haul 4 bikes back to Virginia. Great to see him. We will meet up in Port Orford on Saturday.
We meet up with Joseph and Tom who are having Mexican — few miles away and ride on. Some twisty single lane paved logging road that seemed made jus for ADV motorcycles as the evening chill and towering firs surround us to , Eden Valley CG. Primitive, free, with plenty of fire wood and we are alone for our last night on the trail. 5 nights camping in a row.

Came across this while I was on my own trail. Someone had a bad day.

I wish he would update, the suspense is killing me on what the problem was with his 650. Hopefully he'll update with his diagnosis & fixes.

40th and last day on the Trans America Trail. I’m up first before light and quietly make a small fire and coffee. Sit and sip as dawn filters through the dense fir tree canopy. Ahh... the smells of pine smoke and coffee. A little nostalgic as this epic is coming to a close just 60 miles down the trail. Soon all are up and packed anticipating a quick finish into Port Orford.
Not to be. I am bringing up the tail end and haven’t seen dust for a while when I round a corner and find this.

Thankfully we could ride over or scrunch under the remainder and many had been cut by earlier riders.
A couple spills on the AT and an earlier JB Weld repair on the case started leaking oil. Getting to the destination quick was on everyone’s mind after these delays.

Wind was blowing like a gale with clear sunny skies as we gathered at for a group picture on the beach by Battle Rock. It had been a battle that morning and many other days. We had persevered, adapted and overcome creating lifetime memories and making new friends. I had been searching for adventure and I found it preparing for, riding and finishing the TAT.

Very nice. I believe GPSKevin is spending energy on his lucrative guided trips and none on the TAT tracks. It’s obviously not a priority. It’s a good format and structure but needs some attention. We had Sams tracks too and often reverted to them.

I was the "half TATer" as I only started in OK due to my previous TAT attack in 2017.
Great to have met everyone in the group and grateful to each one for making it possible for me to finish with y'all.

I guess if you look at either of these routes as just having connected the dots to create a basic map to enable a cross-country dirt ride, rather than as a definitive, guaranteed route, with daily trail maintenance provided, then it's not upsetting or disappointing. In fact, that is the magic of Sam's work--that he had the vision and just went out and DID it!

No one can assure an open off-road trail across 5,000 miles! Nature happens! And that's where the adventure begins. Face it, remember the first time you heard about the TAT. Didn't you think, "You mean, that's possible? Far, freakin' out!! I'm doing that!"

So all you really needed was the knowledge that there is a way to cross the country on dirt, right? So, tally ho! Off you go. If a bridge has washed out, it ain't Sam's fault! Get out the freakin' maps and route around it. If the river is too high, route around it. If a road is closed for construction, ride through it :rickyor route around it. If you get lost, figure it out! If you run out of gas or water, then whose bloody fault is that? That's part of the whole fun of it all, so you can say, "Yeah man, I rode across the country on dirt roads y'all!":bubba I look forward to figuring out re-routes when I make my trip. I'm considering doing it without GPS, just roll chart and maps, like some other macho studly group did. [link anyone?] This is a voyage. It's an expedition. It's an exploration.

It's not a guided tour across the States with an advance team a half-day ahead to make sure the trail is clear for you.

This is no longer possible due to additional rocks having tumbled/crumbled over the years.
    .
Soon the narrow ledge we walked the bikes by, will not let anything but the smallest bike thru.

I think you're paying for the primary route with the understanding that things may have changed.

I think that Sam updates the route every year with info he receives from various sources.

For me, that's enough. With that as my primary route, I can figure out the rest with other maps.
