We took a slightly different route from the dunes back to the base of the canyon,
but we still had to do the rocky road again. Yay.
At least neither one of us got a flat.

    Back through the canyons...

    92.jpg

Next thing I knew, we were back to the Echo Canyon steps.
I was okay going down the smaller step...

But I wasn't too keen on dropping down the big step.

Here's Matt, showing me the line...

    95.jpg

In the video, you'll see me shake my head.
    Um. :flip

I didn't even want to walk down the step because I thought I'd fall on my face!

    97.jpg

Matt still thinks I could have ridden it myself, but I'm not so sure.
    Maybe next time.

One of these days I'll ride DV on an unloaded bike.

    Looks like so much fun!!

    It is!
Matt is so over riding with luggage.
Try it, you'll like it :deal

This ride was a little over 70 miles, and it was my favorite day of our trip.
Echo Canyon was even more impressive in this direction; it's pretty spectacular.
My crappy screen shots don't do it justice.
    See the neat arch?

    98.5.jpg

It was so nice, I didn't feel as bad for missing out on Titus Canyon this visit.

    98.jpg

    99.jpg

    And, that's it!
In the video, I do a super dorky wave at the camera - Matt was telling me to wave, but I had no idea what he was talking about.
    Ohhhhh. The video. Right.

    100.jpg

    :rofl

    Oh, wait!
I almost forgot the last video!
Matt did a really nice job with this one. I love you, Mr. Honey! :crash

I'll take this opportunity to thank BigWan for his never ending patience.
He has been the best teacher!

I'm 51 now, and I'm definitely NOT a natural at riding.
I have overwhelming anxiety, terrible eyesight, an extremely old and slow processor (brain)...
    I'm scared of everything!

I NEVER thought I'd be able to ride my own bike, let alone on anything more exciting than a fire road.

Also - I owe so many of you, the readers, an apology for not listening when you said I should get my own bike.
    Who knew??
    I didn't. :dunno

    So, you were right. :deal
    Thank you!!!

At least I figured it out before it was too late!

    Okey dokey,
I think this "little update" is over!
Thanks for the warm welcome back, it was fun to see everyone again!

    :webers:freaky:flug

A few years ago, BigWan and I gave up eating sugar and carbs.
Eventually, we cut out all grains and industrial seed oils (canola, corn, soy, etc) too.
We don't eat most fruit, etc. We don't even drink beer anymore! :rolleyes

My aunt sent me this video and it's hilarious! So true. We're the biggest pains in the ass.

Anyway - Hope you all have a fantastic holiday season!

See you in 5-7 years.

You're doing great! I tried to get Barbara to learn to ride her own bike, but she wouldn't try. Now she's 65 and too late. Please don't wait 5-7 years to do more RRs. I might not be around.

Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2020 to you and Matt. Please tell him hello for me.

Your riding is amazing, you are doing so well. I'm glad you are enjoying it and doing as well as you are.

I hope to see the two of you before 5 years. Thanks for taking the time to do an update, I really enjoyed it.

Not sure if Matt told you or not, but you were riding some pretty nasty stuff for a beginner! You are doing amazing at picking it up and to hear Matt laughing in the video is even better. I'm sure he is liking the 350, I know that my 500 is the best bike I've ever had! Now you need to do Baja on your own bike, you will love it. Next trip might be the oso loca's club!

So much awesome. As I was watching your vid it occurred to me that my wife and I have the same set of bikes as you two. I'm on a 350 and she rides an XT. I'm about half the rider Matt is and you're a better rider than my wife (don't tell her I said that) so it all evens out I guess. We'll keep after it! Thanks for the inspiration.

I was texting back and forth with a guy about some 990 stuff I had for sale. He was showing me pictures of some other bike he had and what did I see in the back ground ? Matt’s 990 in its new home.

    hi guys,

the laptop is still in pieces and we had a guest staying in the office/computer room.
I don't understand how anyone looks at ADV on a phone! I can't do it.

Also, we went snowshoeing yesterday (first time!). It was super fun and pretty.

While I was gone, you guys were busy.
Thanks for all the nice comments!

    Thanks, bomose!
"might not be around"?? I know you're kidding :)
    Nice, try

hi dustyrider - Merry Xmas to you too!

    Hi Ladybug,
    Matt says Hi back :wave
Thanks, I think of you often when I'm riding my "big" bike and I hope you're still riding a lot, too!
Merry Xmas to you and the kitties!

    Thanks, Gary!
I had a feeling it wasn't the easy stuff, lol. :lol3
There has been some vague Baja talk...we'll see.
Too bad they closed Elkins early - but we'll have to get you out on a trials bike when you're ready. :deal

Thank you so much! you're too kind :shog

    Hi Scribe!
Great minds think alike! Is she short? :rofl
Glad to hear you guys ride together - it's awesome, isn't it? So lucky. :thumb

    hey Parx!
That's funny! Good thing you were selling, not buying :lol3

    Wow, Joel!
    Amazing offer. PM sent!

I already told you guys Merry Christmas, but did I say Happy New Year yet?

BigWan and I Hope you all have a wonderful, riding-filled 2020! :ricky

We went riding yesterday and it was 40° :vardy
Hey look - I'm back and it wasn't even 5 y̶e̶a̶r̶s̶ weeks!

Yep, it's official - BigWan and I will be leading some kind of noobie-noob ride at DVNR!
We're going back to DV to do some scouting in a couple of weeks, I'll try and do another mini-update here.

In the meantime, BigWan is working on the XT, getting it ready for more adventure.
We shaved 1.5" out of my stock seat and now I can touch the ground a little better. :D
BigWan made a custom Frankenstein pipe for my XT - it's lighter than the stock one and it gives me a little more power. :ricky
Got a new shorai battery that only weighs 1lb 10oz...
(Between the muffler and the battery, the XT should be about 9lbs lighter)

UPS just dropped off my new 4 gal. tank....

    Woooo! i'm so excited!! :wings

@rider914 - Can you give me a couple hints about where to find Mary?
I totally forgot about her for our last visit, but it might be something fun for our upcoming scouting trip.
PM would be fine if you want.
    thanks!

Wow... Didn't know you two were back :clap
Now I got several pages of this awesome saga to catch up on :cromag
Thanks for taking care of my weekend plans :rolleyes

When will you guys be at DVNR?
I will be there sunday to sunday with a 3-day ride-n-camp loop before the rally :deal

    Anyhoo...
Mary is almost due west of Darwin, about 4 miles as the crow flies :nod
Rock pile at the end of a short spur off a very fun side loop off the equally fun main desert two-track :ricky

    Hey Guys!

    Is it 2025 already?
    :lol3

I wanted to want to update the RR more, but I burned myself out posting in the death valley riding conditions thread.
That, and a lot of this is redundant.
And, I just found out that a bunch of our videos don't seem to be working great (time lapse mode?).
But, it's nice to have a place to share some extra death valley stuff, without hijacking threads elsewhere.

I'm going to chip away at it here and there.
A few things may be cut and pasted from the other thread to save typing.

We were going to a meeting of the SSMC (trials club) on the central coast and decided to work in another DV trip.
I tried to just putt around on my trials bike at the meeting and not get hurt. My heart was already in DV.
(that's matt on the far left)
    ssmc.jpg

Got to Ballarat on sunday, 1/26/20

When we paid for our camping ($5), Rocky told us that the temperature had jumped from 68° to 78° overnight.
He also said the gnats were out earlier than normal.
I asked what he thought the temps would be at the end of March and he guessed, "Nineties"
    Ugh.
He predicted DV was going to have an early spring and a scorching summer.

As we were unloading the bikes, a guy from another camper walked over and told us they would be doing some fireworks later.
He said he didn't want to freak us out. OK, thanks!
I had imagined some lame roman candles, but these guys had serious fireworks!
    It was impressive. And loud!

Matt made a short video of some of the best ones.
At one point, one of the fireworks fell over and shot straight at their camp, scaring the crap out of everyone. :imaposer

    It was really cool.
I love it when we're in the right place at the right time.
Back when we were sailing, there was one Christmas eve when we were anchored at Isla San Francisco (baja) and a mega yacht anchored next to us.
The crew went ashore that night and put on a huge fireworks show, similar to this one.
    :choppa

1/27/20: ballarat - goler- mengel - stella's cabin - mengel - goler - south park canyon- rogers pass- pleasant canyon

Rocky wasn't kidding about the gnats - they were horrible.
Swarming around our faces as we tried to get the bikes ready, the gnats went for eyes, ears, nose, and mouth.
I must have eaten at least 10 of them, it was gross.

Temps in the mid 70s today.
I remembered to take a photo of Goler so you guys can see how filled in it is.
BigWan is where the step normally is.

    Goler from 2012
    [IMG]

Since we rode Goler and Mengel last time, I'm just giving you the screen shots I posted in the DV riding conditions thread.
This is going down mengel (from goler to the geologists cabin) at the most jumbly part.
I feel like the video really flattens things out...

Instead of going to the Geologist's Cabin we decided to stop at Stella's cabin.

I'm sure Stella loved it at one point, but this cabin feels very Hantavirus-y now.
There was a ton of rodent poop on the windowsill in the photo below.

    Stella
    [IMG]

    And her note to visitors
    [IMG]

I will note that the outhouse at Stella's is not as nice as the outhouse at the Geologist's Cabin. :jive

Then, it was back through Mengel pass.
Up is more difficult so I have more screen shots.
Here we go - from geologists cabin, back towards goler.

And, for those of you who didn't see my post in the other thread,
Here's a comparison of Mengel, as seen in my crappy handheld video from 2012
(arrows point out the same rocks)

and this screen shot from 2020
    [IMG]

There are way more rolly polly (roly poly? I couldn't decide how to spell that) rocks now.

Just for fun, here's a photo that matt had from Mengel, circa 2007.
He doesn't remember the name of the inmate who took the photo (sorry!)
but that's BigWan with his back to the camera. And M1jeep pushing :D
    [IMG]

Another one, Matt riding his friend's XR 400 up
    [IMG]

    OK, that's it for now.
Got a bunch of work tomorrow so it might be a while before the next post.

    see you guys!
