Got the fire going in the woodstove.
On my 3rd cup of coffee...:*sip*

    Looking back at the hill

I don't know why I dread this next section so much.
    It always rides just fine.

    2toCC2.jpeg

But I don't like the way it looks.

I feel better following Matt's line, so he went first.
    Inside line. :deal
    3toCC3.jpeg

I tried to take a photo of that section but it wasn't great.
It's always bright with lots of shadows. :bluduh

    Oh well.
    Here's BigWan, patiently waiting.

    5P1010019.jpg

    We continued down the road.

    6toCC6.jpeg

    Chicken Corner was coming up...

    7toCC7.jpeg

I slowed down and Matt went ahead to make sure it was rideable.

    8toCC8.jpeg

He said it was. There's the line....

I could have stopped and looked myself, but sometimes I do better if I just go.
Stopping to talk about it just makes me more nervous.

    9toCC9.jpeg

It went okay. Matt was freaking out a little because I went so slow.
He was afraid I'd stall my bike and then fall off the big rock.
His fears were justified. I had done it on the way to Geologist's Cabin.

In the video, you can hear me say, "Oh SHIT!" as I realize I'm going to land in a bunch of rolly softballs. :lol3
I couldn't see them until I got onto the big rock.

It wasn't that bad, but it sure looked uninviting.

    10toCC10.jpeg

    I'll put the video here.
No music this time. It's only a minute long!

    "That was some sketchy riding...."
    :rofl

    Haha, no dabs, though! :gdog

You can also see me hug the wall.
    Heights! :uhoh Don't look right!

    11toCC11.jpeg

It would be so easy to fall off the edge here...
(I'm scrunched down so it looks like I'm sitting, but I'm not. Squatting)

On our way to Briggs Cabin now.

Great RR, Kelly. You are quite an accomplished rider on that rocky stuff. I could do the easy smooth ones, but there is always one of the others lurking in there somewhere. Gonna try more dirt next year, hopefully.

Hope y'all had a great Christmas and are looking for a much better year coming up.

You're welcome TwilightZone. Thanks for reading! :wave

Thanks, Larry! Hope you get more dirt in 2021.
And, hope you had a Merry Christmas, too.
Matt didn't fall asleep during Pee Wee's special, so it was a pretty good Xmas. :thumb

    :rofl

OK. I spent entirely too much time watching the baby yoda yule log yesterday.
    It's just so relaxing.
I had a real fire in the woodstove, but I knit while watching this instead. :lol3

OK, gotta get us to Briggs next.

    Here we are - Briggs.
You can see the shooting platform and the outhouse from this angle.

    1briggs3.jpeg

    P1010023.jpg

We went inside but I didn't take many pics.
It pretty much still looked like this:

We were very impressed by how full the cabinet was:
    (december 10, 2020)
    P1010026.jpg

    Ho Hos!
Matt was so bummed that we couldn't eat them. :(:
    Sorry, Mr. Honey.

I had some of that kosher salt last time we were here (electrolytes),
but didn't need it this visit. :gdog

I just noticed the cans of skipjack up there - Ewww. Gross.
    Skipjack is the worst.
We used to catch those on the boat (by accident).
Couldn't throw them back fast enough!

Oh yeah - one new thing was a display of postcards.
It said "Take One," so I did.

    briggscard.jpg

@larryboy - I'll mail it to you if you PM me your new address.

I don't remember if I signed the guest log this time. maybe?

Oh yeah - saw this notice taped on the door. Took a pic for you guys.
Basically, they will be doing work up here and the cabins won't be open to the public.
    Feb 7-12, 2021

We sat out back and had some macadamia nuts.
Haven't taken pics out here in a while. Here you go -

    P1010034.jpg

    Horseshoe pits

    Lots of seating choices

    Here's the outhouse.

    P1010030.jpg

There was plenty of toilet paper.

I'm glad one of the things they are going to do is put new decking on the shooting platform.
It's super sketch right now. Very rotten.

    P1010036.jpg

While we were looking out at the "shooting range," I noticed that target way up the hill...

    P1010037.jpg

    Can you see it?
Here - the arrow is pointed at the target...

    P1010039.jpg

    Closer:

The road we came in on is just above the arrow...

I re-watched the video but couldn't see the target.
It should be a little further ahead, but you can't see it from the road. :hmmmmm

    target-2.jpeg

Anyway, watch out for stray bullets as you're going to the cabin! :lol3

The big step is starting to show a little more.

    1southpk.jpeg

But it's still barely visible compared to how it was in 2012.
Do you guys remember that? It used to be way more intimidating.
Here's a couple pics from when we did it 2 up (page 5):

    going down
    [IMG]

    Looking back at the step
    [IMG]

I had been hoping we'd see more cute burros in the canyon...

    2SP.jpg

But, instead we just saw jeeps.

    3SP.jpg

They weren't as friendly as the other 4x4 guys we've seen in here.

    4SP.jpg

Maybe they were just in a hurry to get to the cabins. :dunno

BigWan said he didn't get it.
Going to hang out in a lonely cabin with your buddy? :hmmmmm
    I may have made a
    Brokeback Mountain joke...

:lol3 (I don't think that's the actual quote, but it's the line they used in the 30 sec bunny review - HERE)

    Haha, just teasing.
Maybe they realized they had left the rest of the Ho Hos back at the cabin by accident? :scratch

Oh, now I get to use that pic I forgot to put in the last post...

    :rofl

    Anyway.
The rest of the canyon was uneventful.

    5SP.jpg

    6SP.jpg

We talked about stopping to see if the Playboy was still there...
But we wanted to have enough time to look at Defense Mine, so we kept moving.

    7SP.jpg

    8SP.jpg

There was a bit of a hole here. Probably a jeep got stuck.

Now that we were out of the canyon, the light was different...
    Bright and sunny.

We stopped here to take a pic of the view.

    P1010041.jpg

    P1010042.jpg

Matt didn't record any video and I didn't stop to take photos,
but there was some erosion happening on the switchbacks going down.
Some of the turns had more exposed rock than I had remembered,
and there were a few spots that were washing away.

In the next big storm or 2, I would expect that there will be more damage.
Take care if you are going to ride South Park Canyon after some weather comes through.

From south park canyon, we were heading back to Ballarat...
and then making our way towards Nadeau Trail.

Nadeau Shotgun Road is what the old timers call it.

Nice work on South Park. :bow

Last time I went up there going uphill I fell hard twice on the 640 and gave up right before Chicken Corner.

LittleWan has had me jazzed up to try this loop, even though a couple of my riding "betters" have bailed on the route. The pics don't look that bad............oh yes they do! Between the comments on the final switch backs, Larryboy's admonition, and PCFly telling me to "yeah, you just go on ahead and go up there", maybe I'll reconsider. Big and LittleWan rock!

    Awww. That must have sucked.
I'll bet you had 2 dozen eggs and 3 whole chickens in your luggage, weighing you down.
Yeah, not the most fun on a loaded bike. :nah
And you were riding by yourself. Not the place to get stuck under said bike.

I found some interesting stuff googling "nadeau shotgun road" - thanks!

    Hi Blaise,
oh, it's such a good loop!

How can I get you to reconsider your decision to reconsider? Hmmm...:hmmmmm
Well, what about just sticking a toe in the water and trying to get to World Beater cabin?
Pleasant canyon has some loose climbs, but isn't as bad as going up SPC.
Instead of committing yourself to the whole loop, go check out Pleasant Canyon.
If that feels pretty easy, then continue on to Rogers Pass (if there's no snow).

If there's snow, I wouldn't go to Rogers Pass.
There are too many steep places you can get in trouble.
It would be easy to go down something and then not be able to get back up.

Another thought - you could try going up the switchbacks to South Park Canyon.
Aim for Briggs/Stone cabins and see how far you get.
This is more challenging than going up Pleasant Canyon, but still not *too* bad.
Same deal, if it gets too hard, then turn around and go back the way you came.
You can get a taste of the loop, without committing to the whole thing.
If the switchbacks are seeming difficult, you won't like what's further ahead.

Either way, I would suggest riding this with a buddy - a better rider would be ideal.
There are a number of places where you could end up dropping your bike...
And, you might want help picking it up (deep gravel, steep hills, loose rocks, etc).
Except for 4x4s in South Park canyon, we've rarely seen anyone else out there.
It gets pretty lonely on that loop!

BTW, I didn't mean to freak you out about the switchbacks - they just look a little...eroded.
Jeeps are still getting there just fine!
It's only if there's a BIG gullywasher storm (or 2) that I would be concerned.

Can you imagine riding almost the whole loop (pleasant canyon/rogers pass/south park)...
only to get to the final switchbacks and find the road gone?
That would be a long ride back to pleasant canyon! Especially if there's snow. :vardy

Wow, time really got away from me.

OK, lost focus for a bit but I'm finishing this thing today.

We saw these guys on our way back to Ballarat.

    1P1010043.jpg

Now we were heading towards Nadeau Trail/Nadeau Shotgun Road.

Here are a couple links if you are interested.
    Surviving the Nadeau Trail

National Recreation Trail database Nadeau Trail

there are photos and a map (scroll down to page 6) of the area HERE.

It's also known as P105, according to the signs.

There's a sign behind BigWan here.
    4P1010047.jpg

We weren't sure who had told us where Defense Mine was located,
    but I'm guessing it was @larryboy ?
For some reason we knew to look for it after Minietta cabin.
We had seen the "Lo City" sign before (not realizing that it probably said "Lookout City" at some point).

I regretted not researching this at home. Hadn't really thought about it.
PSR wifi is the worst, I don't bother checking anything but emails and texts.
So, we hoped this was the right way.

Matt said he would help me if I wanted to go to Defense Mine.
He said I could go look and turn around when it got too gnarly.
    But, I declined.
If it was earlier in the day and I was feeling fresh, OK. But I was a little tired.
I told him to zoom off ahead and I'd find a good spot to wait.

    5P1010048.jpg

Before we lost our intercoms, I heard him say there was a huge cement pad ahead.
    A what? :scratch
Oh. This. Yep, that's a big cement pad.
    So that's where I waited.

    6P1010050.jpg

With all these mountains, it gets dark early in the canyons.
I walked around and took a couple photos.

You can barely see my bike...

That's the way to Defense Mine (hopefully)

and that's the way we had come up...

Here's another shot. It was a little rough on the way in.
This one looked best in black and white.

    10P1010055 (1).jpg

    Back to the concrete pad...
I got bored and took a couple pics of my bike.
    Coney!

Still doing his best to keep me safe. :raabia

Here's the only casualty of the trip -
I bent this blinker when I ran into the dirt wall back near Rogers Pass. :doh

    12P1010058.jpg

    Oh, that reminds me...
I forgot to tell you about my airbox.
Before we left for DV, Matt went over our bikes and changed the air cleaners, etc...

He called me into the garage and said, "Look what I found in your airbox..."
Haha - he found 2 acorns and a walnut half!

    13nuts.jpg

    Hilarious.
And we both knew exactly where those nuts came from.
    I provided them!

    My new pandemic hobby is....squirrels.
    I'm a avid squirrel enthusiast.
    Squirrelologist, really.

This song pretty much sums it up.

    :lol3

It started in the summer, with this adorable little dude. Monkey.

    monkey.jpg

Pretty soon we put out a feeder. I was collecting acorns on my walks/rides like a crazy person.
I still have acorns in our downstairs fridge so I can fill the feeder all winter.
    That's Marge, testing an acorn.

    feeder.jpg

Monkey, Marge, Larry, Other Larry (that's an Archer joke), and Girl Riley.
here's Girl Riley at the front door
    riley.jpg

We had some drama last week when Larry scared Girl Riley and she ran into the house.
It was fine. She explored a little, then let herself out.

    So, back to the airbox.
Apparently, squirrels aren't the only ones who like acorns and walnuts.
We briefly had a mouse in the house. It was a very considerate mouse and didn't poop everywhere.
I only knew it was there because the walnuts kept disappearing.
I had a tray by the door and it seemed to be empty every morning.
    :scratch

Matt set a trap and got the cutest, littlest mouse. :(:
It was sad. I like mice. Just not in the house.

But, what I can't figure out is how a tiny mouse got 2 acorns and a walnut half into my airbox.
    Those are big acorns!
Not to mention, how did it get them out of the house and into the garage?
There's a 1/4 inch gap under the door for a little mouse to squeeze through, but not while carrying acorns and walnuts.
The walnut half wasn't broken. How?
    It's weird.

And now I feel super bad about killing such a talented mouse.
He should have had an honorary burial here:

So, BigWan thought he was on his way to defense mine.

    defense0.jpeg

Because we didn't know exactly where it was, or what it looked like,
he accidentally found his way to Lookout City first.

Here's some stuff about Lookout City:
This one has audio, if you want to listen.

Some historical info here (pahrump library)

Matt said he figured out he was going the wrong way, but he kept going out of curiosity.

    LO7.jpeg

BigWan turned around and headed back...

    Past the scary hole again...

    oh, Rob.
You really need to ride DV without a loaded bike! You would have so much fun!
    Goals for 2021. :deal

12/10/20 Pleasant Canyon --> World Beater cabin --> Rogers Pass --> South Park Canyon --> Nadeau Trail --> Defense Mine (BigWan) --> PSR
    cont...

I had a hard time finding info about Defense Mine.
Mostly what comes up are Jeep videos and this sad story from the summer:
    Hiker dies in DV

    defense1.jpeg

Once we were home, watching the jeep videos, we were confused.
    where was that waterfall? :scratch
Now, we realized that if Matt had looked to the left right here:
    Defense2.jpeg

He probably would have seen it.
Not that he would have thought to ride up it...
here's a pic stolen from the internet:

    More pics here, at Wayalife.com

The sun was in his eyes for a lot of this and he was focused on the trail.

    Defense3.jpeg

Some screen shots on the way to the mine.

    DM1.jpeg

    DM2.jpeg

    DM3.jpeg

There's the mine. He didn't explore.

    Heading back.

    DM5.jpeg

So it was especially hard to find anything about bikes and defense mine.
This post from the 2020 DVNR was one of the only ones:

I hope @hardinoki doesn't mind if I use this pic...

but I used it to match up the rocks and see if Matt was in the right place.
The pink arrows point out the ones that seemed to match the photo above.

    dm6Match arrow.jpg

So. Pretty sure that BigWan was in the correct place.

    Here's the video.
Three minutes to the mine, and about 2.5 minutes back.
    :ricky

he loves a clean ride even more than I do. :D

    And then he was back.

    DM7end.jpeg

He said next time we go to DV, he'll take me up to the mine.
    OK. maybe. :lol3

I was happy I had rested up.
On the way back to PSR (via P105), I tried to do it without dabbing.
It took some effort and some creative lines (over rocks instead of around), but it worked.
Lots of fun trying to balance and make the turns in the soft wash without putting a foot down. :knary
It was a good way to end our ride.

I forgot to take photos. Here's one stolen from the Driving Line (one of the Nadeau links above)

and here's one of mine from last time (looking back the way we came):

I love that there are only a couple miles of pavement to PSR if you take P105.
    We got there quick.

    So, that's it!

Another DV update in the books.
This report got more Mobius than the Mobius trip! :norton

    :lol3

I won't be adding more, though. I think we ran it into the ground this time (maybe the time before...)
I know... I wish I had a nickel for every time I've written that, but...
    Seriously. It needs to stop.

Anyway, hope you all have a happy new year!
Let's hope that 2021 is better than the steaming pile of 2020.

I really want one of these dumpster fires!

I spent longer just trying to get the bike to move uphill than Mr Honey spent on the whole trail.

    >"Matt set a trap and got the cutest, littlest mouse. :(:
It was sad. I like mice. Just not in the house."

Just get a no-kill trap. Catch one (or more), take it out a few miles and let it go.
I have the top one... it will catch multiple mice (???).
Bottom ones only catch 1 and then it needs a re-set. Lots of 'em on amazon and wherever.

Aw. Don't forget he's on a girl's bike now!
Aren't you working on some crazy dirt bike build for baja?
    Practice run in DV! :deal

    Hi TwilightZone!
Oh, those see-through ones look good.
When I was in high school, I worked at a travel agency. We had a mouse problem.
I begged them to get no-kill traps, and the boss said, "Fine. But it's your job to release them."

Later that week, he handed me 2 traps and I walked them up to the UC Berkeley campus.
I picked out the perfect spot for the lucky mice and tried to open the first trap...
    Yeah.
I had to pry 2 stiff, dead mice out of the traps. :cry
    It was horrible.

I guess the key is to check them often. And get the see-through ones!
Our future mice will appreciate that.
    Thanks!
