The long overdue Manawatu Thread has finally arrived :clap

It was going to have a windmill shot as the first post but as I haven't been out to a windmill on the Tiger it'll have to wait. However, we have an equally fitting picture to get the ball rolling......a KTM1090R & 1290 Super Adventure kindly borrowed from the nice folks at AFC for a couple of hours (sorry bout that guys but we were havin fun and time sorta got away on us :dunno)

    IMG_0438.JPG
Killing two birds with one stone, we took the bikes for a demo ride out to Stormy Point (IIRC) past Fielding where my riding buddy was able to service a GPS base station.

Really enjoyed being on a big Kato again (1090 for me), heaps of low down grunt, great suspension....whats not to like!

    IMG_0433.JPG

Actually there were a few things if I'm being pickie.....KTM still don't do comfort; seat was awful as was the screen. Neutral was elusive to find and the big V twin was a tad vibie especially comparing it to the Tiger's inline triple which is "butter" smooth by comparison.

I had hoped for more but like the Africa Twin I tested, it just didn't light my fire. Suffice to say the Tiger will be in the shed for a while yet.

I dont think Wade was overly excited by the 1290 either but that's for him to say as I didn't ride it. I did leave it standing when we did a side by side 100kph roll-on test......I latter admitted I was in 4th gear while the 1290 was in 6th. The look on Wades face when he was left in the dust was priceless :imaposer

Anywhooo if your adventurising down this way please feel free to post up some pics......I have loads of exploring planned over summer so hopefully there will be heaps of cool pics to perv at :bmwrider

    OK, one last Kato shot....

    1090? low down torque? :ear

i'm guessing thats compared to your 800? after owning the 1050 motor the 800 was a bit of a rev box.

still to ride either of those big kato's

Its not a 530 but for a big bike it was pretty good off idle and pulled extremely well at low RPM. I'm comparing it to my 990 which was a bit of a pig at low RPM mainly due to the FI which wasn't too flash on the 07's

The tiger has good torque but as you say, its higher in the revs which I'm still getting used too. I've been reliably informed dropping a tooth on the front cog will help it a lot so am ordering a new sprocket for it.

Yup. All three from the same ride.

If you are going to do it, come in from the Hall Block end - it's good gravel & then deteriorates from there.

The ride the photos were from was from the Pahiatua Track end. That's fairly heavy clay initially.

It's the joke that just keeps on giving :rofl

Also the other half of your GPS service techo buddy was in a spirited conversation on the cons of a new addition
We had to make her an extra Mocca full of seditives..................:lol2:lol3

There's a little bit of this linking the North and South sections. There's a photo lurking about somewhere of MarkS managing to straddle the track.

I'd be up for coffee and mud if you feel inclined sometime.

That section is best to keep to the wheel tracks as there is a good base in the bottom.
It gets a bit worse around the corner from there at the south end just before it gets back to gravel.
