Nice, I haven't been up there for ages, must take the littlest bike down there at some stage.

Anyone watching got an offroad bestier? I'm thinking of going out to Taikorea tomorrow (probably late mornig or early aro). Be nice to have someone around to pick me out from under a suzy...

There's a place up here at Woodhill Forest called the Sandpit. I talked a couple of the guys I rode with in Thailand into having a go on rented 250s. The deep sand was hard work. One guy went over the handlebars and actually skewered himself on the clutch. Blood and everything, another good reason to fit proper handguards. Ive never heard from him since. Not much from the other one either :)

I still hate sand. Watching you manhandle round the soft corners and the unpredictable random excursions into the shrubbery brought it all back.

Thats the bike to be on though, or an even lighter 2 stroke.

Yeah, it handled it better than me. Glad I got a 450 rather than smaller - you can be a lot more lazy with the gearbox, no need to keep it on the boil...

Yeah, on the website for the track, Paul Whibley (owner) warns that it is a workout. It's not just my back which is a little sore this morning...

Looks like you're enjoying the 450, with sand drop your rear tyre to 4 or 5 PSI and the front to around 10 PSI, stand up , get your weight back on the bike and nail it to get the front out of the sand. The first 10 metres are terrifying then its ok until you try and slow down, then its really terrifying! At least the sand is soft to land on....
When i started adventure riding I took my DR650 to Woodhill (the sandpit up here) to learn how to ride off road... memorable is an understatement, I had people stopping to see if I was still alive more than once, it took weeks to recover.

Most sand I ever dealt with was NW Victoria, Oz. The 300 could bark thru/up anything I pointed it at.

Ok, my pressures were quite a bit higher than that...ignorance is, well, ignorance...

Yeah, I definitely noticed that more speed was better than slow. I actually took off with a hiss and a roar, gave myself a bit of a fright and then got out of shape when I slowed up. Then I had periods of ok riding followed by the odd stuff up - like stalling the bike when using the rear brake etc, etc.

I still enjoyed it but probably not high on my list for a repeat. I really should do something about my fattedness...

I've never air'd my tires down for anything. But then I to like fall off a lot. Played in some deepish sand couple week back on the Tiger. Handled it ok with some momentum....wouldn't like to have had to stop though. My Beta Trials bike ran on virtually flat tires and had astounding grip but I never had to carry a pump to re-inflate them for the ride home

    North Range Road ??
    A question for the locals

Are you able to get through there at this time of the year or will it be generally too wet and muddy ( I dont mind a bit of a challenge ) :snore
I am coming down to Himatangi Beach this weekend and staying for a couple of nights to catch up with some friends and thought that because the weather is looking good i might throw the bike on the back of the Ute.
Was thinking of riding up to the Shannon Dams and then through north range road on Sunday

spotted about 30 4wd's going through there on Saturday, so imagine its pretty churned up. I reckon you'll get through ok...you'll likely get wet feet though.

What are ya riding? I'll probably never take my S10 through there but I'd take my WR through there any time of year.
