Thanks Padmei, somewhere I will head next time I am in the Mainland
Aww looks like I missed a good trip! Good call on skipping the beach to make the most of that weather.
Guess I need to get the maps out but I'm keen

A neighbour thinks that he may be able to arrange access. I don't know where exactly it is.
It's a public road so no permission required. Head towards Molesworth station and hang a right where the seal ends. Go through the left hand gate and follow your nose I may tag along if outsiders are allowed, and depending on work/ days off
Off the Molesworth on the Western side right by a high fence.
The only caution I would pass on is that it can be incredibly bleak up there & strong winds can throw you off the side. I would choose the calmest day you can. Also when I went up on the Nthn Dusty Butt the road was littered with big rocks. it was hard on my KLR. I would prob hesitate to take Schmidt up there for fear of sumping out on a rogue rock.
I see, if it's this rough it might not be a good idea after all. It's getting a bit close to winter. However, if a fine day came up, it might still be worth a try. I can always turn around if it gets too shitty.
Never been up there so am as keen as a keen thing. Weather, work etc permitting.
I checked it out on the map this evening, looks like the first half is climbing along some steepish country with some switchbacks, and then follows the ridge west towards the peak.
As you say Kokopelli, turning back is always an option.
I'm keen as
Other than the wind... its no drama at all...
If theres any wind down in the valley..it's going to be near gale force
up the top...
Yer can tell people how windy it can be up there... but they really
don't have any idea till they have been up there on a windy day..
ride on the side of the road closest to the wind... so yer got enough road
to recover when yer blowen side ways..
a couple pics from near the top...
Thanks for the ride guys, sorry I could not stay for a drink (racing went well-I won the Ray Anderson memorial club champs for small bore class and was second in open 4stroke behind former world GP MX star Josh Coppins-yes he kicked my arse Ha Ha ). I had a great time and am keen as to do it again soon.Nice to meet you Padmei, thanks for the photos (I must do something about that L Plate !! ).
Hmm I havent been up there in a while, might join you.
Choose a clear day the view is amazing.
Saturday is looking pretty good.
Should be all good for this if you are still keen. Will know for sure tomorrow, but am at 90%.
Yes, should be good to go. I have no idea if I can find it or how far it is from Blenheim.
I'm in at this stage as well.
10am at the Blenheim Rail Station?
Fuel across the road and it's on the way through Blen.
A check of the map shows it to be roughly 50-60km each way from Blenheim
Turn off SH1 before Seddon heading up towards the Molesworth, go about 20km and turn off to the right heading up into the mountains.
It's a pretty clearly marked road on the map so should be well signposted.
Good that you'll come as well. Taylor Pass should be open again.
First gate on the right about 20/30 metres after the end of the seal.....
It looks like a private drive.... He did have a illegal piss off sign on the gate .. Ignore it , it's legal access..
just don't wined it up till yer well passed the house..
