    I sent you a text.

they told us we didn't need to make a reservation at Gifford Pinchot. they said if the office is open, we can pay when we get there, if not, pick an empty site and pay in the morning. I'm coming from CT and it is crazy hot right now :(

So I went off route after finishing section 5 and rode about 30 minutes to Gifford pinchot state park and rented a cottage on the lake with a lake view and met up with inmates edgeoftheworld and svneko .We bonded over beer and bike talk. It started raining around midnight and continued all morning so after we packed up and headed out to do section 6 we just took it slow and tried to make the best of it . After finishing 6 we continued on 7 for about 15 miles and then found a great deal on an air BNB about 18 miles from the trail we could not resist plus it was forcast to rain into the night so we didn't want to deal with the tents and wet gear .I have to be honest so far Pennsylvania is disappointing at least sections 5 and 6. Hoping for some better stuff tommorow on 7. We are going to try the expert extension. IMG_20191002_104856698.jpg IMG_20191002_104739503.jpg IMG_20191002_104951028.jpg

Section 7 was boring the expert extension ( beginer-intermediate in my opinion ) saved the day. The po paddy Rd. Decent was fun too . Nice overlook at top. We grabbed a state park tent site which had hot showers .Did not get any sleep that night , could not get comfortable. We woke up to 34 degrees dressed accordingly and started the ride at 40 degrees. I was very comfortable. Section 8 expert extension ( intermediate in my opinion and too short ) was the highlight. Section 9 bridgeout challenge was the highlight of that section. Met another inmate Sal who was kind enough to lead a short ride from his home town thru Kingston , ny and closer to Vermont for me I am in Bennington Vermont fornow waiting for the rain to clear out so I can explore and enjoy the fall foilage.

It was great meeting @carbonjunky along the MABDR. We met up Wednesday and spent 5 days riding together along with @svneko and another friend of ours. This is one of the things I love about riding motorcycles. Randomly meeting people and making new friends. Here are some more pics from our ride.

We took the Section 7 expert trail after we got to the top of whatever mountain we were at. John said it was more Beginner/Intermediate. I am definitely in the Beginner/Intermediate range of skill level when it comes to off road. Closer to beginner. It was less challenging than other places I have ridden. But that doesn't mean I didn't drop my bike a couple of times :)

Following @svneko through a puddle. I knew as I was going through, I shouldn't have followed his line. Damn mud.

It was 2.5 miles from the beach and the cheapest I could find ( still not used to the prices up here in the northeast ). I planned to stay two nights there so I could have a day to sight see the area. Also I chose this area because two friends of mine moved here this past year from Atlanta. So I planned to meet up with them for a lobster dinner the following evening. I really love the rugged coastline of Maine. The next day the skies cleared and it was a beautiful mid sixties day . I went to the beach first ( old orchard beach ) it was a nice Sandy wide beach , they had a pier there with amusement rides and shops but was closed for the winter. I then ventured to the closest state park they had two light houses. Saw a few locals searching thru the washed up sea weed for snails . They boil them and eat them.

I then went to Fort Williams which was just up the rode by south Portland. Nice walking tour around the old remains of the fort and a nice light house

Sorry to backtrack, but wanted to give a shoutout to this place. Right smack on the MABDR near the end of Section 7. Buttorff's. We rolled in at 4 pm on a Friday with one of us having a dented rim that was leaking air. They called the mechanic back to work and he spent the next couple hours putting a tube in. Really helpful to riders. IMG_20191004_155208551_HDR.jpg
And just for good measure, here is the crew at the end of Section 8.

Ok , so after the fort Williams tour I headed back to my room to get ready for my friends to pick me up for dinner. The place they planned to take me was closed so we searched for another seafood place and found one that was not closed for the season. Ordered the whole lobster , being in Maine right on the coast was expecting much better was disappointed. IMG_20191008_182910198.jpg

The rain was coming back in 2 days and I had already been further up the coast in 2005 to see Acadia national park and that area so I planned to head to the interior and see Mt katahden and the Baxter state park area. What a great decision , the ride up to that area was very beautiful and colorful IMG_20191009_110322630.jpg IMG_20191009_141147333.jpg IMG_20191009_152356345.jpg IMG_20191009_152511269_HDR.jpg IMG_20191009_152416837.jpg

I reached the closest town to Mt. Katahden called millenock got a room at an inn that had a bar and Chinese restaurant attached to it. I walked up the road a short distance to the chamber of commerce and talked for a good while with the guy working there to give me some recommendations for the next day . My window of time before nasty weather moved back into new England was getting shorter so the plan was to take the golden road out of town which gets you close to the Mt. Katahden for great views and goes by lakes and rivers and bogs which would give me an opportunity to see some moose. Also there were 3 hiking trails on that dirt road to see some points of interest IMG_20191010_093529403_HDR.jpg IMG_20191010_093957898_HDR.jpg IMG_20191010_094007315_HDR.jpg IMG_20191010_094130187.jpg IMG_20191010_095319342.jpg IMG_20191010_095410629_HDR.jpg IMG_20191010_100542935_HDR.jpg

That golden road was dirt but the first half was well maintained and wide open . You could cruise at 80 mph with ease , but every so often you had to watch out for the logging trucks flying down that road. I finally reached the turn off for the hiking trail heads about another 2 miles down a smaller dirt road that went along a river. I parked my bike at the trailhead and stripped down some to be more comfortable for the 2 mile IMG_20191010_113036793.jpg IMG_20191010_113119860_HDR.jpg IMG_20191010_114120546.jpg IMG_20191010_114231095.jpg IMG_20191010_114302266.jpg IMG_20191010_114936628.jpg round-trip hike. It was a gorgeous trail full of ferns and really green moss growing all over Hugh boulders that you hiked thru and around

It was a very peaceful and quiet place didn't see anyone else I then came to a split in the trail and took the trail to the ice caves. There was Hugh rock in the side of the mountain and it had an opening in the bottom. They had installed metal grab handles and made a ladder down into the hole so you could get down into the bottom of the cave . I crawled up into all the smaller extensions of the main cave searching for the ice only to find it was near the beginning . The ice is always there year round and more so in the spring.
