(Hint: phenomal brownie point-getter for those who need to boost their account. Well, I didn't - just sayin' might help out some .. hehe)

We've (when I say we, I mean ME) been thinking about finding the relaxing kind of holiday, though not keen to join up with Bill Burr's definition of Cruise-tragic tourists just yet (his youtube clip: final solution explains it, it's funny. imo). I also always liked the idea of a river cruise ala Agatha Christie's '78 movie 'Death on the Nile' ... ... so this seemed an acceptable compromise to us. Two leisurely days riding our bikes up along the scenic coastal stretch, 4 days on the Paddle Steamer Murray Princess, 2 days leisurely ride home - sounds just like the right mix of R&R (ride & relax). Thought, said 'n done. Romantic 'US' time - here we come!

left from Devonport - caught the ferry Spirit of Tas - Melbourne - Mt. Gambier (o/night) - Coastal stretch to Mannum; Mannum - Port Fairy - parts of the Ottway Mountains - Melbourne - Tassie. About 2100km.

It snowed in Tassie's highlands about 4 days before we left! Meh. Arrived in Victoria >>> 20 degrees C at 6:30am. 27 C @ 8:00am. 32 C @ 9:30am. 42 C from lunchtime onwards. Strong headwinds ALL THE WAY! @#$%^&^%$#@ ... could have done without them.

Stayed at the converted Old Gaol in Mount Gambier. Neat. Clean. Very basic- but pleasant. Last convict held there in 1995! 'Struth! A modern prisoner caged by those ancient walls. Phew! Unpleasant.

Next day temp crept up to 46 C by the time we got on board the boat. But - What a boat!!! Everything I hoped it would be. Spacious. Wood panelled, brass, nice bar, nice rooms .... 5 star treatment allround. Excellent food & company & staff. Lazily luxuriating in the bar or sun deck to watch the scene float by - magic! It's almost as if NO engineer or committee or Corporate accountant had ANY input in designing a space to make people feel comfortable & welcome. Is that even possible?

Ride home lead us more inland through hundreds or thousands of acres of vinyards. Didn't know they made 'em that vast. That ride was more scenic and enjoyable than the way up.

My planned crowning romantic stay at a converted (western style) 1850's railway carriage fell through. After a long ride from Mannum to Codrington Gardens we were somewhat deflated when reality didn't match with what was advertised on the web. Something to do with filth, hundreds of dead insects (killed by the unbearable heat inside the unventilated carriage) fell out of the gaps in the ceiling onto the bed, chairs, towels, etc. Yuk! Closer inspection revealed ants being busy harvesting those tasty morsels ... the signals were clear, time to move on. Find somewhere else to bunk.

Luckily Port Fairy came to the rescue. Found a motel keen to accept late guests. Also found 'Port of Mexico'! Who'd'ave thunk it? Great mexican style food in a tiny Australian seaside town. Sangria. Burrito. BURRITO ... uh-huh! hmmm .... just the right thing to quicken a weary traveller.

Temps dropped sharply. Along GOR (Great Ocean Road) 20 C to 16 C. Maybe less in some shady spots. Turned left somewhere in the Ottways, time seemed to speed up - needed to get to the ferry in time. We shortened the last leg a bit, more reason to visit the Ottways again another time. We enjoyed it! That River Cruise is something else. In a good way.
