Turns out for game 6, the intereference call was correct, I stand corrected.

And to give some credit to umps, they take a beating and still have fun at times.

IMHO, the only reason that the batter was out was due to a bad throw from Peacock. It's a shame to see a bad play rewarded with an out vs runners at 2nd and 3rd.

After listening to Smoltz, the 'bad' throw might have been on purpose, with the hope the batter will be called out for interference.

there's no definitive right or wrong, as it's inherently an umpire's judgement rule. imo, it's still a wrong call because of:1 ) the shitty throw. the 3 foot line exists for a clear throwing lane from the vicinity of the catcher. 2) the ball hit him when he was midstride, last step to the bag so it's a permissible place to be hit if he had taken a longer path outside the foul line, but not in this case? the bag itself is outside the running lane. that's why that immediate vicinity rule exists. just dumb.

baseball's running path rules are so stupid in general. you have to play in foul territory? the running path is undefined until a tag is attempted? i mean, a runner can literally go into the outfield by the rules. so dumb.

As a former high school umpire back in the day, they got the call right. Harold Reynolds nails it.

It's explicitly a judgement call play (which is why it's not reviewable), so there is no exact right or wrong.

If the call had gone the other way, umpires would have said it was the correct call, and Joe Torre would've still defended it as the right call. Wait, that actually wouldn't have happened because all the normal people would have thought that was the correct call, there would've been no controversy, and nothing to defend. ;)

Have you guys seen the story from last week about Houston having been stealing signs and releasing it to the batter via trash- can bangs in the dugout?

Mike Fiers, current A's pitcher and erstwhile Astros pitcher confirmed it.

Well, it looks like Jomboy found probably footage of the machine.

Saw that one. They all do it, or at least try. The Astros got a rat problem.

I don't believe that "they all do it."

Or try. Manny Machado was accused of it in the World Series in 2018.

I don't believe that for a second, prove it. It's not a rat problem if it's caught on tape, brah.

One person was accused in addition, so everyone must be doing it? The pitcher who came forward did so because he said it lowers the game of baseball, he's the "rat".

Individuals stealing signs is allowed, and downright encouraged. That's not what the Astros are accused of.

Meh , I played on an American Legion sponsored league team in 1971 that was coached by a career minor league player who never advanced past single A ball . He taught us to steal signs any way we could . It's part of baseball , a part the big boys don't want folks to know about .

Stealing signs has and always will be part of the game. I was a catcher.
You get real fucking cagey when you have a runner on base, or a rubbernecking 3rd base coach. And I was pretty nosy when I was on base.

We can agree that has nothing, at all, to do with systemically cheating as an organization, using a high powered digital videocamera, a signalling system and alerting the batter in real time which pitch is coming down the pipe within moments.

Not even in the same universe.

Here's the White Sox pitcher figuring it out and switching signs on Gattis.

Also, didn't the Dodgers get busted for this in like the 1960s? Using a telescope behind the scoreboard? They got in big trouble if I recall.

Sadly the astros cheating was thwarted by the janitorial staff that replaced the metal trash cans with Rubbermaid cans.
