5:10am sitting on my stool in the garage; I’m contemplating my bike.
Mrs. Molochnik pops in to tell me she’s gonna make herself some coffee.
It could be my anhedonia but I’m not “excited” as one typically thinks of the word. This seemed so far away for so long that I mostly feel as though I’m just following through on a commitment... and it wouldn’t be wrong to classify it that way.
    Gonna miss Mrs. Molochnik.

Yamajoe is on his way; it’ll be good to have another rider put some eyes on the bike.
If everything is nominal, the adventure begins in 2.5 hours.

In my experiences - the things that I am the most ho-hum about end up being great adventures. Enjoy and be safe!

    A great opener. IN!

You are to be commended for starting a RR just as @DragonJoe, @fjmartin and others are winding their TAT adventure down.

    Sincerely,
    Vicariously

    Wow. I’m beat.
The bike was working great as I left Lancaster CA. Trails I know and I was astonished at how well the DR’s suspension was working. I spent a lot of time fiddling with the luggage; lost my duffel behind El Mirage but got it back on. Everything was cool until I dumped the bike just west of Barstow.
Worked pretty hard at getting it back up and luggage back on. Stopped at Harbor Freight in Barstow to buy a couple more ratchet straps and a prybar to get my bars close to right again.

Got into Baker and decided to head down into the Mojave National Preserve to camp. Love this place.

This is my only other pic- from the beginning of the day. US6 is one of the original transcontinental routes but it’s been realigned through so many traffic lights I’d never have the patience to follow it. I do intend to snap shots of signs as they pop up though

Funny story from yesterday morning; my buddy Joe came up to see me off. I wanted to have another set of eyes on my rig too. As I wheeled the DR outside he asked me some of the more obvious questions including asking me if I checked my coolant. I’m not trying to embarrass Joe here, I just thought my fellow luddites would get a good laugh out of it.
On the subject of luddites, I’ve been unable to see what my GoPro is filming. It’s an older one and I haven’t used it much.
Mrs. Molochnik keeps buying me cameras for my bikes and I never think to use them. I hope I won’t disappoint with my lack of videos.

I was following DragonJoe’s RR before I left. Curious to see if he or fjmartin chime in.

Looking at some of Kevin’s ride cards that came in my packet, I believe each one is a day’s ride, some seemed kinda short mileage-wise.
Holy mackerel, the piece between Baker and Vegas is brutal. Brutal enough that I am holding back on “sentence enhancers “. Lots of loose deep gravel. I dunno how anyone does that stuff on big GS bikes.
So that said, I can understand how some sections are shorter than others.
I got into town here and was absolutely exhausted. Could hardly think straight when I got here. Was concerned the people at check in would think I was drunk.

Here are the pics I shot yesterday. I shot a couple videos with my iPhone-it makes a valiant effort but it’s not for washboard roads
Evidently a “pano” pic won’t upload.

Of course, nothing showing the loose gravel.
I had to heft the bike back up 3 times and each time takes quite a bit out of me.
No “crashes” just low speed front end tucks and even worse, losing footing and just dropping it. Very defeating.
On a bright note, Yamajoe informed me that I’ve actually finished the LAB2V...2018 :/. I guess my time isn’t that great but it didn’t take a full year!

At the the snow mountain smoke shop. I think this is where the dirt starts.
FWIW, trying to follow the gps route out of Vegas is a pita. Some of the dirt grades along 215 were fenced off...albeit this version is from 2016. I’d expect a few changes since then
