On a motorbike in Morocco again after 33 years...

We got to Marrakech Sunday evening, picked up our Honda 250s on Monday morning and headed up to the mountains...

The weather was fine and we were soon on the road to Ouarzazate heading over the Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2,260 metres) to Agouim. IMG_2298.JPG

We were travelling light so the Honda Tornados were okay if somewhat passed their best. Both bikes' instruments weren't working - the mileage on my had stopped at 111,000 km. We could have done with another 10 bhp but they were the last two bikes available in Marrakech (and reasonably priced at 50 Euros per day plus a 500 Euro deposit) so it was take it or leave it!

The tyres were good - Phil's bike had knobblies and I had a Mitas road tyre on the back which was fine on the stone and gravel pistes. IMG_2308.JPG

We wanted to reach Taliouine that night so turned off the main road (N9) after topping up the tanks at Agouim. The plan was to take to the piste after Assarag and cross the mountains to Askaoun then onto Taliouine but we missed the turn (we didn't have satnav). So it was all winding, single track tarmac with stretches of gravel - an easy introduction to Morocco. The panoramic landscape is amazing. IMG_2310.JPG

Phil's sidestand collapsed but no harm done this time. The seat fell off because it was didn't have any bolts holding it onto the frame!. IMG_2318.JPG

We got to Taliouine just after dark and found a hotel on the main street. Sadly, a polite enquiry about the possibility of a cold beer got a negative response. Beer was not going to be available in the small towns we were staying in. Still, the food in Morocco is great and the vegetable tagine and bottled water was welcome after 8 hours on the road.

Taliouine is due south from Marrakech in the Anti-Atlas mountains. Our route took us through the Tizi-n-Tichka pass to Agouim; through Sour to Assarag and then on to Askaou and Askaoun. Not sure of the mileage as the clocks weren't working. IMG_2665.JPG

The plan was to head north back to Askaoun and then east over the Tizi-n-Tleta pass to Tazenanakht; route MH7 in Chris Scott's 'Morocco Overland'. IMG_2345.JPG

Following too closely behind Phil, I completely lost visibility as he disappeared in a cloud of dust and had to stop. Landslips had left sand across the piste that turned into fine dust - fech fech. This is where the Mitas back tyre had its limitations. IMG_2351.JPG

This piste may not be around for much longer because the first 10 miles was already being graded for tarmac. It then became our first real piste of the trip: IMG_2354.JPG

The Atlas mountains are home to the Berbers who live in isolated communities. The villages are being connected by electricity pylons and tarmac roads which means that this dusty piste may be tarmacked soon. Got to be good for the people living in such a harsh environment. The upside for tourists on road bikes is that there are miles of new tarmac roads through the mountains with very little traffic. IMG_2357.JPG
