    DRZ update:
may effect my riding at the winter ride

pulled the head and found a bad link in the cam chain which I belived caused the mistimed engine that resulted in my exhaust valves hammering the piston and locking her up good. I also found a small piece aof a needle bearing in the oil. the only needle bearings I see in the motor are on the rod.

I believe I will be replacing:
    the valves
    the rod
    the piston and rings
    the bearings (4)
    the cam chain
    gaskets and maybe the head
should cost between 500 and 1200 dollars
depends on the head and a few other pieces that may go.

while I have it apart I am looking at a big bore kit and will probably replace the clutch fiber plates and springs.

if god steps in and my parts arrive quick and I actually get this done I may have the drz for ride. If not I will bring the connie and see how she climbs hills in the snow.

here is what happened. Cam chain becam a little loose, my bad.
cam chain failed, jammed between guide and cam, wrecked cam and head ($$$$$) needle bearing piece was actually off the exhaust cam automatic decompression system. So

    replacing
cams (found a set on ebay)
    head $380
Valves seats springs seals etc..~ $200
    head and base gasket $28
    piston rings $40
    cam chain $55

lesson learned? watch that manual cam chain tensioner closer...

actually the chain was pretty worn from a bad automatic chain tensioner, so it was not replacing the chain that bit my ass. damn.

hopefully i will be up and ready for the winter ride.

come on parts, be in stock.. just this once, please.

Thanks for sharing the issue. I have read about the Automatic Cam Chain Tensioner going bad on the earlier DRZ's on thumpertalk. Good luck gett'n it back in shape!

While your gett'n parts...pick up some oil filter o rings too. That almost cost me the Galena ride but Fist had one and saved me!

I just ordered a replacement one from Jesse Kientz. He sells the updated version tensioner for $65 bucks. I haven't had any problems, but thought it was cheap ins...

i have beat that bike hard, and I should have replaced the chain when I saw it needed lotsa adjusting. no regrets buying it.there were no probs when I got it, but I did make a few since...

I actually beleive it was a few things combined that caused it to go.

I buried the bike in a pond disguised as a puddle, towed her home changed the oil and rode the next day to school and back. checked oil...white (emulsion). that 30 miles of bad oil probably added quite a bit of wear.
my bro staples was gonna buy one but I think he backed down now cuz my brother phil melted a head gasket when his drz overheated from a stuck thermostat. that was a freak thing, but then mine blew. I still think its an awesome bike and would reccomend it to anyone.

how have you been jdiaz? coming to our winter ride?
