I have a friend in Hanoi who runs a bike hire business www.gobambootrek.com ,his name is Thai. He knows every track from hanoi to Myanmar ! Also you should contact an adv rider called Viet Horse . He lives in Saigon but travels a lot ( vfr800) he can help you get an a2 licence so you can ride over a 175 leagally. Also my dentist lives in Hanoi (Australian dental clinic) and very good and cheap!

Hanoi is a great city, great for walking, historic, and many wonderful people. Riding in Hanoi is OK once you understand the rules but parking is a pain in the ass. Even for riding in the mountains a Honda XR150 is adequate. If you have the blue card in hand you can ride a Vietnam-plated bike into Laos and Cambodia.

Lots of great riding up North and in the Highlands. Phong Nha to Khe Sanh along the Laos border is a sleeper ride that nobody seems to talk about.

I've got another three weeks or so in HCMC. (Teaching English.) I rented a Honda 150, and went to Cape Ca Mau last weekend, and will do Cat Tien National Park this week. IF I have time, I hope to get to Dalat.
