Today's ride took me from Porangahau to Hastings, then across the Gentle Annie to Taihape. I'd forgotten how much fun to ride that bit of road is. From there I headed to Oakune, National Park and up the Western Access to Tokoroa and finally to Putaruru.

The day started warm and fine and finished the same way. I road through rain from Oakune to the start of the Western Access, by which time I had to stop and take layers off again.

I shot some video of the Gentle Annie so will process that when I get home..

Sadly I witnessed a motorcycle crash on the Western Access.

A large group of motorcyclist coming the opposite way as l was heading north.

Suddenly one of the riders gets his bike to close to the verge and loses control of his bike. Bike and man suddenly flying through the air and down the bank.

Miraculously no one else got caught up in process. Bike a right off and rider seriously injured.

Happened 100m in front of me. My rusty first aid was called upon, but I left before the ambulance arrived. Nothing I could do anymore.

    .

    Pics, what few I took

    Day two 520km.

Wet ride from Putaruru to Oakune, but dry in Oakune itself Looks like a drier road home .

First must have a good hearty breakfast after riding two and a half hours in the rain. The mountuon house special ...

Had a short stop at Moomaa Cafe just north of Bulls. They make good coffee. The dry roads were soon to turn very wet again south of Foxton. The accompanying wind with the rain made for tricky riding conditions, but with yesterday's scene still firmly etched in my mind I took it very steadily. Made good time on the motorway even in the pouring rain.

Day three 520 km, 400km in the rain and wind.

Footnote to this three day trip.

It wasn't until I had unpacked and cleaned up after today's ride, finally sitting down to relax that I realised how tired I was.

Riding nearly 400km in wind and rain is hard work.

With the indirect routes I took I rode 1,450km in three days. Was a great ride overall.

Tomorrow I head off on a four day road womble around the top half of the South Island. Weather forecast looks good for the most part.

Picton tomorrow evening then catch up with @KiwiPewe for a beer.

Route roughly for the 5 of us Wellingtonians doing the trip is Picton to Westport via Havelock and Nelson. Westport to Karamea to Hanmer. Something from Hanmer to somewhere, then I peel off and head to Christchurch for a bit of Work Tuesday morning. Then I shoot up the coast to catch the late ferry home.

    Pics to follow.

All packed and ready to go, including work clothes. Sports jacket, black shoes, decent longs. Amazing what you can fit into the panniers when you pack carefully.

I'd forgotten how slow the ferry trip can be. Four and a half hours of boredom.

The South Island is somewhere in the distance
    IMG20191122132735.jpg

    Wellington is somewhere back there

Damn close. Got the call to go to the vehicles and then they closed Picton due to a suspected LPG leak. So instructed to go back upstairs and wait it out :dirtdog

    Got off the ferry eventually.

Met up with @KiwiPewe and went for a blast through Queen Charlotte Sound. No hope of keeping up with him on his 701 with motard wheels. Didn't help with my new tires, Anakee Adventure. Have to say I am disappointed with that tire will not be getting those again. Tires are such a personal thing while I don't like them others do. I'll be back to TKC70 after these.

Parked up at a motel for the night in Picton.

The Africa Twin next to a DL1000.

    Great ride today.

The versatility of NZ at display in two threads. Mine for great road riding, @oldbeer for gravel running.

Back to my day. Picton to Havelock via Queen Charlotte Sound for breakfast .
