I think there were six tunnels on today's route. One from the outside:

    And inside

A few more late after noon landscapes:

That's aptly named Stony Bald from the overlook of the same name at 4,200' and this is another view of it from 5,800'

And a last picture in the late afternoon sun. This and the first fog photo were taken from the same overlook.

Thursday I'm heading south to Highlands and Franklin to see some waterfalls. Hope they've gotten more rain here than we have in Nashville or there won't be much water going over the falls.

We haven't had much rain at all. The smaller falls are not running, might want to stick to the gorge/hwy64. You can always ride around Lake Glenville, north of Cashiers on 107.
The temps have been perfect though!

We ( meaning all who can ) should make a plan this winter to have a get together some where along the BRP for about 4-5 days.
I live so close ( about an hour as the crow flies) from the BRP but have not been up there since my stroke. Gotta work on that.

    Day 4

A little less mileage today (165) but a little more touristing so the scooter trip was still about 9 hours, same as Tuesday and Wednesday.

The first 20 mile segment was the same as yesterday, US19 to the BRP north. Another pretty morning with fog in the valleys. This view is from the BRP at about 5500'.
    AD3C222C-DA13-44B3-A80F-C3A0A3DF929F.jpeg

Then US74 east to Sylva. This is what the fog looked like at 2100'
    C0B11DB9-02E2-4F14-83F1-8BF9610D549D.jpeg

Then south on NC107 To Cashiers. There were some impressive kudzu patches along the way.
    9892A61D-F614-4966-BCA1-4E3DA2F95812.jpeg

Then east on US64 To Highlands. This is a very upscale mountain resort town, lots of gift shops, fancy clothing stores and restaurants. Even saw a Ferrari go by. Had a nice lunch outdoors.
    877A4EA8-8206-4E82-B345-DAA664A7B0BD.jpeg

After lunch went for a walk around town then got an ice cream cone at Killwins, same store as up north in Michigan. They even had Mackinac Island Fudge and Traverse City Cherry flavors.

Next headed north on 64 toward Franklin and stopped at couple of water falls. This is Bridal Veil Falls right beside the road.

Wouldn't this be an unbeatable Scooter Tag photo - "Your scoot behind a waterfall"

Dry Falls was a little further down the road and several flights of stairs down into the gorge to see it. Not too dry. Quite impressive.

About half way to Franklin I took Pine Creek road West 20 miles to reconnect with NC107. I love these old decrepit farm buildings.

Pine Creek road skirts around the north side of Lake Glenville just before 107
    59C590D5-9BE0-4CA8-9556-9D9BAAE1CF7A.jpeg

I then reversed my morning route but stopped at the Waterrock Knob Visitor Center on the BRP. The center itself is at 5820' and a half mile hike goes to the top at 6292'. Let me tell you, 472' up in half a mile is pretty good aerobic exercise especially in the thin air. Catching my breath on a bench along the trail I happened to look straight up. There's beauty everywhere here.
    80F31F97-9E5E-4AE0-872A-D58F04C6DCE5.jpeg

Here's a photo from the summit. You can see three stretches of the parkway center left and way down.
    6EBA4E90-42C4-4448-B075-89CAD0F9B734.jpeg

Several people have told me the roads in the Smoky mountain NP are not too congested right now so tomorrow morning I'm going to ride to Clingmans Dome then return to pack up and head home.

Be careful getting too close to that KUDZU , we lose a few tourist's every year ,when they aren't looking. That stuff moves fast,
and I'm told it especially like the taste of yankees. :rayof

Looks like you were riding many of the same roads that Klaviator took us down a few weeks back. It is so much fun to explore the area and to see so many of our slices of America. I can't wait to get back. Thanks for posting the great pics!

    Day 5

Just a half a day to ride as I needed to be on the road by 1:00 PM to make it back to meet the rest of the family for dinner at my son's house in Huntsville.

Clingmans Dome, in the middle of the Smoky Mountains National Park, was a nice 40 mile one way trip. 80 miles in three hours is about my average what with stops to take pictures and just enjoy the overlook views.

Here's the daily morning-fog-in-the-valley shot from Clingmans Dome.
    36CEB365-F7A0-40C4-9357-38C855B65FAA.jpeg

Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the park, the highest point on the Appalachian Trail and third highest peak in the east. The visitor Center is 6300' and the summit, which I did not walk to, is 6643'. I got there about 10:00 AM and there were quite a few visitors already, many freezing in T shirts and shorts. Bright sun but windy and 49 degrees. The clouds blowing over the ridge were impressive.
    1A54E17E-E4F4-4C65-9A7F-151A3F2A1B3F.jpeg

And here's an 8 second time lapse video of the cloud flow

A pleasant hour ride back to Maggie Valley and a pleasant but long 5.5 hour drive to Huntsville.

Great ride report. I have to agree east Tn is totally awesome place to ride. We should get a group together for 1 last ride before the temps drop to freezing at the higher elevations. I really like the hitch carrier too. Very convienent for loading and unloading.

Lets do it! October is usually very nice. After that we could still get together in middle Tn which is typically has good riding weather through November.
