It's amusing to me that they painted the seats in such a way that it appears they are full with not one person there.

If the seats get any more empty the drivers will outnumber the people in attendance .

I read the other day that NASCAR laid off about 50 office staff, I’m sure they have plenty of redundant people on their payroll.

I'm kickin' around the idea of coming down for the Duals Thursday night. Just haven't decided if it's worth the traffic hassles getting in and out.

Duals are usually not that bad for traffic. Heck, even raced day they get people out of there much faster than they used to.

I hope the 500 is better than The Clash. That was boooorrrring! I won't even get into JJ wrecking hundreds of dollars worth of race cars.

That's not what I saw. I saw JJ cut it too close. I don't think it was intentional but he screwed up, plain & simple. The little bit Menard moved could hardly be called blocking.

Slow/late move on Menard's part. Blocking is what you do from the front at Daytona, way more video of that then anybody turning someone from 2nd at Daytona. That's shit happens at Bristol and Martinsville.

JJ did what you see more often at restrictor plate races. He backed off Menard and to the car behind him, used the draft to come back to Menard, with now extra momentum and pulled out to side draft and pull air Menard's rear spoiler, which would slow him down because there was no longer a car behind Menard. It was a text book last lap Daytona pass. The rain was coming, the 48 team treated that as the last lap. That's just a veteran champion move, while Menards spotter was sucking his thumb and not telling Menard what JJ was about to do until it was too late. There is absolutely no reason to turn a guy there, because the draft does all the work for you.

It was a veteran move passing a mediocre driver. Menard tried to block, but was late to make the attempt. If JJ tried to turn him, both cars wouldn't have immediately gone down to the yellow line.

I'm not a JJ apologist either. I don't root for him, and I actually don't enjoy seeing Menard not drive the Menard's car (now the Woods Brothers #21 car). Its obvious what happened by simply watching what the cars did after contact, immediately going down the track, not up it.

    Couple things...

    1. The spotter for Paul Menard is now Joey Meier, formerly the spotter for Brad Kesolowski. He's one of the better spotters at Daytona/Talledega IMO.
    2. My opinion is that this was really neither drivers fault. The change in air pressure/amount of air on the 21 moved him to the left just enough to get into the 48. The 48 was very close trying to get the best side draft he could. Racing deal caused more by the aero package than the two drivers making decisions behind the wheel.

Maybe so. I still feel like Menard's instinct was to block, but was caught off guard by the move JJ was making, and a little late on the trigger. If it was the true actual last lap, and not the 48 team taking a gamble watching the weather, its likely less of the surprise I think it was to the 15 team. It wasn't the usual couple car length drop back you usually see, I actually didn't catch it until the replay.

Who knows.... but I agree it was a racing incident, not malicious intent by either driver. It is unfortunate though, that a few million $$ in cars ended up getting destroyed behind them.
