Fantasies? Whatever are you talking about? I am living vicariously through myself. Did you know that Dos Equis made a series of TV commercials about me? :D

    Hi!

As many hours as I have spent reading Ride Reports I should know the answer to this, but of the Latin America countries including Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Is Mexico the only country of the group that requires Vehicle Importation/Exportation? Also, which countries require insurance besides Mexico? And fuminizations? Thanks!

Donnie just take loads of $$ on debit and cash and have a blast until it runs down to the get home money and then , turn back. You've just got to manage the time and money, kinda like a little game to see if you can equalize the two and still get home:lol3

Have fun amigo, maybe I'll see you around...

I don't do much planning for trips now days, but I do need to know more about the rules and regulations down there. I want to spend my money and time having new experiences, but losing time and money because I'm not familiar with the paper work is not one of them. :D

Great spreadsheet.....but how does it change anything? You're going to skip a country because it costs thirty bucks to enter, or charges you a dollar or two for a phony, worthless fumigation? I know it all seems important right now, before you leave, but that's an illusion. It's not important. It doesn't matter. Don't stress.

Decide where you want to go, then go there. The costs included in your spreadsheet are incredibly minor in the whole scheme of any worthy trip; instead, concern yourself with lodging, food, fuel, parts, tires, and (notably) beer. These are significant, add up rapidly, and will make even the most extravagant insurance/import/fumigation/local constabulary fees (this would be Mexican insurance, I believe, unless you get yourself fleeced at the Honduras border) fade into obscurity.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Mark!

The cost of getting in, out or fumigation will have no effect on whether I go into a country or not. In fact, I plan on visiting all of these countries! This exercise is simply to educate myself and maybe help others, on the paper work necessary at each border. Cost was simply added to maybe help folks from getting unknowingly fleeced.

I would really appreciate if you would comment it if some of these "Paper Work" requirements are incorrect. :deal

There is an Australian beer called Castlemaine and their trademark is XXXX.

New Zealanders like to claim that Castlemaine uses that trademark since the average Oz resident cannot spell "Castlemaine" :lol3

    Hi Donnie,

Of the squares missing in your graph.
    Mexico exit fee=no
    Mexico insurance required=no, not mandatory

    Guatemala insurance required=no, not mandatory
    Guatemala fumigation=yes, 20 quetzals (3 dollars)

    El Salvador exit fee=no
    El Salvador fumigate=no

Honduras TVIP=included in 34.00 entrance fee (they charged me 550 lempiras at one crossing and 625 at another) so the fees are approximately 34.00 to enter)
    Honduras insurance required=no
    Honduras fumigate=no

Nicaragua TVIP= included in 150 cordoba ($7.50) entrance fee
    Nicaragua exit fee=yes $2.00
    Nicaragua fumigate=yes $1.00

    Costa Rica fumigate=yes $3.00

    Panama exit fee=no

This is from my experience last month. Prices and practces are subject to change of course, but were identical on my way down and back up from U.S. to Panama in all countries but Honduras, where the different borders charged slightly different.

I calculated everything I spent on border crossings and mandatory insurance and it came to around 200.00 round trip. I only bought insurance in the countries that required it (Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama) and it was still good on the way home. . I skipped Belize this trip, but went to the other 5 Central American countries plus Mexico. I didn't check out of Mexico on the way south, so skipped paying twice at that one border.

If you did everything by the book and bought insurance in every country it would still cost less than 300.00 round trip I am guessing. A minor expense compared to your beer tab. (just kidding)

    Hope this helps someone.

    Kindest regards,
    John Downs

    Hi John!

I am almost to the end of your RR! Most of the information I already have came from your RR and Lonely Planet! I was planning on emailing you when I finished your RR to ask for additional info, but you beat me to it! Thanks!
