I am riding a drz400 looking for gpx maps for baja all the way to Cabo with as little pavement as posible. I wanted GPSKevins map but it isn't on his website. Please email chase.rawlins@yahoo.com Thanks!
Have a look here: http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/21-days-exploring-baja.922187/ Due to the remoteness of some of these areas, you should have a buddy riding with you for a trip of this nature... Southern Baja just had a tropical storm roll through a short while back, so expect a lot of "detours" !!! Mulege and Santa Rosalia were hit particularly hard. Keep an ear out for more storms rolling through, as it's hurricane season till October. Arroyos can be deeper than they appear...... !!!!!!! Another resource is the E32 topo map. Off-road tracks are hard coded into the map. http://cartografiagps.com/en/ Any questions, email Omar... he's very helpful
I wish someone would come with me. I have posted in trip planning and been keeping an eye for other people posting trips.
You can get gps Kevin's tracks by opening the map in Google and then export the kmz file to your computer. But beware, he made those tracks before his trip and I can guarantee you that some of them are not passable except by foot or maybe a mule. I second the E32 maps. Things change in Baja (locked gates, storms, etc) so be sure you have enough fuel. Unless you know the trail is open you could get a long way in only to find you need to turn around to get out. And be prepared for the heat. It's still pretty warm especially on the Cortez side (heat index was 140 in San Felipe begining of last week) but the temps are starting to come down. Have fun.
Oh yes, the heat... Carry lots of water cuz not only your body needs hydration, your bike may need some too if you have a chance meeting with a cactus and your rad.... This happened to one of our group a few years back. We used all of our water just to get him out. Travelling solo can be a bit of a risk so hopefully you're carrying a SPOT or similar device to let friends know where you're at, and can launch a rescue if needed.
If anyone is delaying their trip slightly, I'm in San Diego with my bike (kiwi rider on g650x) on the 10th of February to head to Cabo Pulmo (basically bottom) and then onwards to mainland Mexico. Have ridden overseas plenty, speak a little spanish, and not a crazy rider. Puede ir conmigo?
Collo. Where do you go when you head to Baja. I go every November. I head out of Phoenix. Always interested in new thoughts. The lone Burro
Sorry in advance to dig up this old ass thread. I rarely log in haha. I've been going for the last two years, at the end of the year. First year we parked in El Centro and rode the coast down to Bay LA then down to San Ignacio and back to the border. The second year we drove to Bay LA and parked the truck, rode to La Paz via green door trail -> El Arco -> San Ignacio -> Mulege -> Ciudad Insurgentes -> La Paz. On the way back we took the dirt road North up the coast and actually found some track in the wilderness all the way up to San Jose Del Noria and then rode a "trail" down to Aguas Verde and then highway to Bay LA . This year I'm taking the SV to Merida, so I'll be blowing through Baja.
