I've been wanting to get back to Nevada and ride the big empty for a while now.
Ride reports from Mastermarine, Wachs, and Hodakaguy are like a bellows blowing on already hot coals.
When I couldn't wait any longer, I reached out to Mastermarine, hoping he would share some of the information he had collected
from his years of planning and leading rides in the northern Nevada area.
He is a really nice and generous guy, we talked for a while on the phone about his previous trips and places not to miss.
Without his help I wouldn't have been able to get a ride together in such a short time. Thank You, Mike!

A big reason for doing a ride report is to let Mastermarine know how things panned out for us.

What I was looking for on this trip was a no frills adventure ride.
The kind of ride where you wake up, make some breakfast, get on your bike and go all day... rinse and repeat.
Anyone who's ridden Nevada can tell you that's exactly what Nevada does best.

Nevada is the star of this report with its ever changing scenery, smells, flora and fauna.
We riders are just the supporting cast.

Hey guys, :wave thanks for coming along. I know Nevada reports don't really bring 'em running in, but maybe we can change that. :photog

    Day 1
    7/21/15
    Lovelock to Virgin Valley
    214 miles

Since we're riding a giant loop of Nevada we could start the ride just about anywhere.
We decided on Lovelock, NV simply due to its proximity to CA and not because of all of its many amenities. :lol3
We met up at the Lovelock Inn the night before, so we could get an early start in the morning.

If I had to sum up our stay at the Inn with just one word, it would have to be "BEDBUGS".

We headed over to the Cowpoke Cafe for a pretty decent breakfast before hitting the trail.

We weren't in the dirt long before we came upon an old mine shaft.

So we stopped to check it out.

It wasn't very long or interesting. To be honest, we don't normally stop for stuff like this.
Since this was the first day and we were just getting warmed up, it seemed like the thing to do.

It didn't take long to leave civilization behind and find the middle of nowhere.

Bartek is starting to think he's glad he came on this ride.

We were on the trail less than an hour and we saw our first herd of Wild horses.
    Or so we thought.

It turned out to be a group of burros, but to me that's even better.

We are headed towards Gerlach to top up our tanks before crossing the playa.

As we climbed up a mountain side we passed this stud just chillin'.
He was so confident, he just didn't care we were there.

    Almost to Gerlach.

    Hi guys!
As usual, major league baseball and I were spying on BigWan.
Here are the first of many SPOT track maps.

BigWan's tracks to Lovelock. He met up with Bartek and Osito in Reno.

We loaded up with all the fuel we could carry in Gerlach.
I had my two front tanks, rear 2 gal. tank, 2 gal. MSR bladder and three 1 liter MSR bottles.
Denio Junction was closed and we didn't want fuel to be a problem. I had a little over 10 gallons on board.
Hell, with my bike I could probably go over a hundred miles with that much gas. :lol2

Speaking of burning gas, we are on the playa.

We were pretty lucky with the weather so far.
There had been some rain on the playa a week earlier and it was a little moist in spots.

I can't speak for the other guys, but I was having a little trouble adjusting to the loaded 990.
For the last 6 months I've been riding trials almost exclusively.
It has been difficult to unlearn many of the techniques needed to ride the big bike fast.
The transition to trials is tough for fast guys. Learning how to ride slow, really slow is truly difficult.
So, here I am on this giant monster making tiny control inputs and subtle weight shifts and quick throttle blips. All with little to no effect at all.
These beasts only respond to a heavy handed rider. It took me an entire day to get up to speed.

The clouds built as the afternoon wore on.

It's only day 1 and we are on roads like these. The stuff of dreams.

Next up was High Rock Canyon.

It started to rain as we entered the canyon. We welcomed the rain, but it made looking for the mail cave tough.
We missed it, maybe next time.

The canyon was a blast to ride through, I will definitely be returning.
