For those of you that have been following the "Another Alternator Hits the Dust" thread, you know the new design is supposed to address the stator failure issue. I haven't been able to find anything on when the factory started using the new design and it's certainly a consideration when buying a used GS.

This thread is to help determine what bikes have the pre-mod or post-mod alternator.

I'll start by saying my 2012 F800GS was built in 02/12 and it DOES have the new one! :clap I would think that the 650's built in that time would too but we can't be sure.

    EDIT:

For the record's sake I will update the original post for ease of use.

F800GS built on January 4, 2012 DOES NOT have the new design rotor.
F800GS built on February 29, 2012 DOES have the new design rotor.

The new design has 6 large ventilation holes (speed holes Homer).

Let's here what you've got. Of course if the new design doesn't fail, you will have no need to be in there to determine what you have.............

Mine was built in 01/12. I've never had to pry mine open in the last 16k miles, so it's probably the new version.

Is the only difference in the new design the holes? Just curious as I'm a Machinist and when mine fails (2010) maybe I can just machine the older flywheel to match.:evil

How many miles are on that motor? The stator looks fresh.

I have an 09 F800GS. I'm not sure on the build date, but I think its late in 2008. I replaced the stator in August at 40,000 miles. It had not failed yet, but I had several long distance rides that I did in the fall and I didn't want it failing on the road.

It was starting to get a bit burned looking.

Still had the old style flywheel I did not replace it.

IIRC it was figured out, though I can't remember if it was here or the F800 forums, that the newer flywheel was brought to market sometime in 2009. Not model year though calendar year. So 09 model bikes probably won't have them.

The stator part number did not change just the flywheel part number IIRC. But you can't buy them separately from BMW. They will only sell the stator/flywheel assy. Cost is just under 1000 dollars last time I checked when I still had my F800ST.

I don't hang out in the other forums and I don't remember anything here. My 2011 650 engine DOES NOT have it so I doubt anything before that does. From what I read in the Alternator thread here, 2012 was the first I heard of it being available through the parts counter.

I believe the production use is very close to my 800's SN making mine one of the early ones. I was shocked to find it installed.

You're right I'm thinking of a different bike. Ignore my last post I'll see if I can dig up the thread on the P/N change on the forums.

So do all 2012 F800GS's get the new stator/flywheel design?

Is there a way to tell without opening her up?

Well, if mine has it and yours was built after mine then we can reasonably assume yours has it too.

No, that's the purpose of this thread.

Look at the VIN label on the steering head. The date of mfr is on the top.

    2 bikes?

The beer fridge is half empty, the bike is half full. :D
