First off what could go wrong with those screen names? This is a prequel entry to the ride report.

First off we launch from Dell City, TX on 13OCT2020. I will first discuss my prep for the ride for anyone that hasn't done anything like this. I will know in a couple weeks where I went right and where I went wrong.

First is the motorcycle: original plan was to ride my 2019 BMW F850GS. I had it prepped with racks and Tusk Pilot soft bags with BDCW platform pegs and luggage rack for the rotopax and dry bage with 20mm bar risers, phone and gps mounts, lights, and fresh set of Shinko 804/805 properly scrubbed in at DART Level III training. Well one week ago developed a very unhealthy sound I will have to diagnose when my orders end and can get back to the shop. Not mad at BMW, just bummed about the timing. So what is plan B with a clutch cable/push rod issue on my R100GS? Plan C, the Sober Aunt's 2017 F700GS. Quick stop at Revzilla and burning credit card got new Dunlop Trail Max Mission tires, bar risers, auxillary lights, and bigger foot pegs. In the way to save some money and keep the wife happy who LOVES her Vario cases I am going to use those.

This is not only a ride report but a rolling report on these new to the market tires. I am starting the trip with 4900 miles currently on the odemeter and 10mm of tread on the front tire and 14mm on the rear. Dunlop claims 8,000 miles for these.

@Dan Diego will be riding his trusty GEN I KLR with tried and true tires and soft luggage with gps. Some will say he is the smart one. I don't want to steal any of his thunder so he can chime with his words.

Our initial plan is to meet at Pine Springs campground on the 12th with him coming from Albuquerque, NM and me from Killeen, TX. Getting a start the next morning. We have no time hacks to meet so there is no rush to race through BDR. We have already agreed to any reasonable side trip or stop either suggests. The only initial disappointment is that the train out of Antonito stops running a day or two before we get there.

I will post up pictures of the bike set up Saturday. I still have a couple parts to install.

**Please do not make this a BMW bash thread. Bike broke under warranty and will fix it. Timing just a bummer. I will not ride another brand!

I know this is likely a bit late in the year, but not too late. I’m bringing warm weather gear, so we’ll see.

Like Drunk Uncle said, I’ll be on my ‘96 KLR. I have the Tusk DS tires on now with some wear, so I’ll see how far I get before swapping them out. I’ll be using the Giant Loop Great Basin rear bag. Since we’ll be camping the whole time, or as much as possible, I’ll have a decent Big Agnes tent and a good sleeping bag. Still, it’ll be chilly.

I’ve done a few rides with the DU including a couple good Baja runs.

I did the AZBDR on an orange bike, so I look forward to this one. No time constraints at all, so we’re guessing 6-8 days.

Will add some photos and other stuff as soon as we hit dirt.

That’s us at Rick’s on our last Baja thing.

A bunch of us Texans did most of it in June. One of the many highlights was Chloride Canyon. Also, don't be put off by the rocky section not long after that. There's a bypass on the map but don't take it. Good luck and have fun.

No, we’ve already agreed this won’t be like San Felipe...or Eréndira...or Bahía de Los Angeles. Really.

    We’ve changed.:fight

@Tricepilot thanks. I am friends with Duncan Cameron who I think was on that ride with you. He showed me pictures and was below what Bill Dragoo puts through. Super stoked to push out on Monday from here. I feel I should have more packed while also feeling over packed. There is always one more thing I could use. Going to go through everything Sunday to what I really need.

Look forward to following along on this one, the NMBDR is on my wish list; actually dream of doing the full CDT at some point in my future.

Looks like a great crew going, knobby side down and great premise to start the report @Drunk_Uncle!
