Another one in line for the Wee-strom kit. I already have a Pelican 1500 bolted on as a top case, and it works great. Have you considered adapting the new 1430 top-load cases that Pelican has a side cases?? They look pretty roomy, and the top load feature would be a big plus. Also, they are only about $60 each. I was ready to buy a couple and bolt them to an SW-Motech quick release rack, but I like your design much better. I'll be waiting....
Keep us up to speed as you get close with the F650 bags. With the weight of my Jesse's, I'm interested....
Gadget, did you use the 4 thick lugs on the Pelican cases to put your bolts through? This and using a hard plastic bushing to keep the sharp bolt threads away from the Pelican material would eliminate the problems. And a big fender washer on the inside of the case. Yes there will be a KLR system you can bolt your existing Pelicans onto. And yes I use kitchen trash bags to hold my clothes. I also pack things I need to access often in the right side, and I put the bike on the side stand so the right case is tilted up and nothing falls out. The lanyards help too.
The new 1430's are too small capacity for the majority of the market, and they are very wide at the top and narrow at the bottom due to the large draft angle. Too heavy too, and too much material to remove off the back of the case to make a bracket fit. Not very suitable for Caribou luggage.
Hmmm, the Adventure rear rack is different from the 1150GS. I'll have to take a look at my buddies Adventure to see if one top plate can be made to fit both bikes. Good point.
sweet system! I mounted the 1420 to my wee strom I have pictures on the vstrom forum under gallery appearance pages 17 & 18 under my name gken1954
I'm not sure what you mean by thick lugs? pics would help! I"m using the Happy Trail SU racks.. but once your system is ready, I might switch over!
>The 1150GS is done, next up is the F650GS, KLR, V-Strom, & 1200GS. Please don't forget the Funduro/ST! If you need a "mule" I'm sure Dinskeep will lend ya his! I've been comtemplating using the OEM racks, but I don't like the angle you end up with. (Front end wider than the rear)
Typical! Could you add some elastic cord X pattern retaining straps a la BMW system cases, in that they eliminate the spillage issue inherent with clam shell designs. Just because BMW does it doesn't mean it's bad! Mr. helpful... just doing the job. Patrick
what about mounting the bags lide side in so the deep part of the bag is the side that tilts down? it owuld elimiate the stuff falling out this is a very sweet set up and I get a Strom this is the set up Ithink I'll go for very nice piece of work
I have HB top box and I had it loaded with some tools and other stuff. When I hit a large bump, the luggage rack frame broke off just behind the passanger seat. The HB has similar mounting points as the above picture, they recommend no more 5 Kilo's storage. Mounted like it is it looks like it will act as a long lever on the on a frame that is made out of cheap pot metal and is not that strong. The large top box looks like something I would be interested in. The side cases look like a great system. Is there a combo price? Bill
Gadget, here are the pics and tips for mounting bolts in the Pelican cases, strong and waterproof....
Yes, those little elastic straps in the BMW cases do work well. I did think about this detail origianlly but it slipped away, thanks for bringing it up. I also need to put a side-marker reflector on the case.
Bill, The BMW GS tail rack does indeed need a support brace, and this will be part of the top case kit. The braces (one each side) bolt to the most rearward subframe mounts and to the outer holes under the BMW tail rack. I'll offer the top case separately, probably no combo to keep things simple on the web site. -rog
Check you out making your own bags! Who do you think you are? I've had Jesse racks in all of their "high-school-welding-class-reject glory" on my bike for so long, that something that nice would cause rejection issues.
I had a chance to look at Roger's prototype of this system at the HU meeting this past July, in Buena Vista, CO. It is an exceptionally well thought out design, especially since the Pelicans can be easily removed from the bike/racks. Pelican cases, being pretty fungible, will be easier to replace compared to some other systems. Roger, ya done good with this design and you've been busy since the HU Meeting !! I'm still interested and hope you sell a gillion of 'em.
Roger, Very cool idea and good realisation. A thought..... I've not checked, but shipping costs to outside the US could be a deal breaker for some. Have you thought about offering a "build yer own" kit of just the hardwear and maybe some templates\instructions. I can get the cases over here. Good luck with this. Simon
How about interchangeability (is that even a word?)? I have a KLR and a V-Strom 1000. Would the bags from one set-up fit the other? Great looking system! Jim
Just beautiful. I wish you would have had these ready a year ago when I bought my Givi topcase and System cases. My major reason for buying the Givi was the ability to put my briefcase w/ laptop in it, but the 1550 Pelican would work even better than the Givi (and would probably hold up better...) Keep us all apprised as things develop, as I might just have to make some changes, if nothing else for the top case. Again, excellent looking setup. kix
