Just fitted my new Scotts Damper mounting from KTM Sommer. It puts the damper under the bars and includes the risers (gives a 4cm rise over stock). It's close to the tank but dosen't touch.
there we go...... much nicer than on top of the bars. what does the mount look like to get it down there? i assume you had to lift the bars a bit too?
Looks great Looks like a weld on rather than a bolt on, yes? Sounds like the kit is complete, risers and all, that's cool.
Sommer had a full under bars / bolt on solution that I tried to get some months ago, but for some reason Oliver from Sommer told me it wouldn't fit my 2001. The spigot was on a collar that braced the steering head upper part. It looked perfect, as it was bolt on and it would elevate the bars 40 mm. Looking at Ktim's it looks like he is using that same kit but with a weld on spigot.
Tim, Can you tell us waht's in the kit? Or the kit P/N? I have a weld on tower in mine which was welded to a brace that bolted through the frame. It's not a definitive solution as the oil in the frame breathes through the holes. I don't have a good pic of it... I would like to set up something like you have in there as we gain another 10 mm bar height, against the standard risers. Here's sommer's catalogue:
Damn it KTiM!!! you just screwed up my whole list of things to get for the Adventure. I have been working on this thing for just over a year and WHAMO! Thanks!
cj1150gs, Sommer part number is FLDA1 it is called a "LENKUNGSDAMPFER AUFNAHME", Price 59.48 Euros. The kit includes the damper holder, bar raisers and longer bolts.
So if I am getting this all right, for my '01 this kit will work, but it will need to be welded instead of bolted on? KTim - your set-up still working dandy? M
The tower will need to be welded on, but I don't know of any bolt on Scotts damper mount that will work with a "640" LC4, unless you change out the upper triple, or start cutting things like steering locks, and replacing the handlebar bolt nuts on the underside of the triple. (A local machinist fabbed up a triple for his personal Duke II so he could use a bolt on tower mount, he told me there is no way he would ever do it again, major machine shop hours, and a real P.I.T.A.) IMHO, the weld on tower is pretty straight forward, and it works well.
I am in between at present, (performing maintenance, well I recover from a broken leg) but the past setup was a standard Scotts mount top bar clamp on Pastrana FMX bars, in this case a Dirt Tricks upper bar clamp (IIRC) but I would just pick the cheapest and/or the one you think looks best, and a weld on tower. I have the Sommer underbar mount on the workbench, and short of possible issues with the control cable lengths, I expect to have it permently mounted later this week. (If I end up needing aftermarket throttle and clutch cables I expect it should be pretty easy to get some, and I am hoping that the 950 choke cable will work in place of the 640 decompressor cable.)
Mind if I ask what the Sommer set up cost ya with shipping? Cost prohibitive? I am thinking I will only need moderate rise, think the Pastrana's would suffice for a fella like me (foregoing risers)? Top clamp like you used and get on with it?!?!? Gotta make a decision so I can get my show on the road again and ride... M
I thought the Sommer Damper ran about $50+, but didn't KTim say it was 60 Euros? (I would trust his memory better then mine.) If so that would be about $75+usd, and shipping is pretty damn spendy, unless you put together a group order. The Pastrana FMX bars should get you 30 to 40mm's rise, combined with say 20-30mm "bar stock" risers, that should work pretty well, if your not standing for long stretchs. This would be the most cost effective solution as well, and if it still does not give you enough rise, you could always resell the top clamp and convert to the Sommer mount at a later date.
KTMTiM, here is a paste of the question I posted on the headlight guard thread. I think it will be better addressed here Pardon my confusion as to which thread I'm on, but I recall KTMTiM stating something along the lines that the Sommer underbar mount included the mounting plate, which looks like a hunk of anodized aluminum with some holes tapped in it, then some tubular risers, and then the bar clamps, which look as though they have a half tube connecting the lower bar clamps, which are sitting on the pretty ordinary looking tubular risers. Top clamps look ordinary, too. Not knocking the piece, mind you, but trying to take a critical look at why I would pay shipping on a piece of plate and some tubes. Am I missing something here? Those of you who have made home made riser tubes, (Loaded et al), is the tubestock extremely thick-walled, ie: is the ID meant to be similar to the OD of the bolts? Tim, are the bar clamps your stock ones, or were they included in the Sommer kit? Can you please describe the lower clamps. As I wrote above, they appear to have a semi-circular (tubular?) connector bit between clamps. Is the lower dampener mount anything more than an aluminium (Commonwealth spelling, yanks) plate with tapped holes for the damper, and holes for the bar mounts? Is it relieved (milled out) anywhere underneath? OK, that's all I have for this hour! Thanks, everyone!
Duplicate reply from the other post, in case the search function starts working again. For those who have not browsed the Scotts pages, here is the link, info on the dampers, and pics of LC4's with both a weld on and a bolt on tower mount. http://www.scottsonline.com/indexmain.html
