For a Ex-IT guru or what ever, you sure do have a lot of problems with a simple GPS. :imaposer

I dunno...mine works perfectly on wifi. Any route I build on MyDrive shows up on the 550 instantly over wifi, the Euro map loaded easily over wifi, the US map updated just as easily, I get notices when something needs to be updated (usually the Euro map speed cameras) and they load easily over wifi. In fact, I've never plugged it into my laptop.

Just took it on a car trip thru Zion and it worked perfectly. Syncs with my phone, get traffic and construction zone updates in the Route Bar. And, regarding traffic, I believe it comes with lifetime traffic, along with lifetime worldwide maps. Color me completely satisfied so far.

I rode with the unit in stand alone mode.
    No cables
    No wifi
    No Bluetooth
    It's excellent :p

Yeah I mean no product ever has any defective units. Pure perfection.

Oh for sure there’s a chance of defective units. If the rest of us are seeing doable WiFI connection speeds and most things working, sounds like yours was indeed a problem one and should be replaced by TT.

I bought it from Amazon so I just did a return. I may purchase it somewhere else to ensure I definitely get a different unit. However Amazon has such a great price on it right now. No one can touch it. Alternatively could try the Garmin but I think the TT interface is a bit nicer.

Mine was more of a “mine works, so nana nana boo boo”.

    I’m an ass like that!

Can the Tom Tom 550 Rider display/follow forestry trails?
I need something that is capable of that level of detail.

Nope. As far as I have seen it’s roads only. It will do the farm to market roads that are gravel

If you load a sample .gpx into MyD$%#, you'll see what's what.
I'm assuming what doesn't show on MyD$%# also won't show on the device but
don't take my word for it- that's just been my experience so far.

The TT maps seem to be more detailed West than East as I was able to load the Colorado BDR route.
Curious, whether the guidance will work. Won't know until this summer when I get out there :)

Are people here working with TomTom Support? I know there's a push to have consumers go to the user 2 user discussions but if you're calling / writing TomTom, are you having your problems resolved? I'm sort of speaking for myself here but curious if I need to share some feedback with the support team.

Just got mine today. WiFi seems to work well. Amazon had a great price so I pulled the trigger. I think it’ll do everything I need on the roads I ride.
