Luas bike is a really good looking setup. The bike being beautiful to start with, helps. Think I have the same screen and tail rack. Are there racks under the bags? Omega Racer?

The racks under the bags are Yamaha OEM Y's Gear purchased from WebBike Japan. I believe that the racks from Omega are similar but not manufactured by Yamaha.
I had considered the Omega racks because they are available with a black finish. But in the end I went with the Y's Gear based on my previous excellent service/delivery from WebBike Japan. The OEM stuff also comes with the Yamaha fit and finish and all the necessary hardware.
The bags, by the way, are Nelson Rigg Dual Sport bags mounted ass backwards.
Tthe original US 1978 through 1981 SR500s came with cast wheels. In part, I wanted to recapture that look, but I also wanted the ability to run tubeless tires.
An interesting bit of trivia along those lines. The 1978 and 1979 model cast wheels on the SR500s were not tubeless compatible. They changed to tubeless wheels for 1980 and 1981 (the same years they went from disk to drum rear brakes).
I didn't know that.
On the topic of accessories...I just checked and it appears that the availability of the official Yamaha accessories is dwindling. The OEM side racks, referenced above, may no longer be available.
There is plenty of aftermarket stuff still available, but even that is not what it used to be.
A British moment with my SR400
Adjusted the valves. Both were loose wth 1,4 miles.
Went all the way and removed the tank.
British--the spigot nipple.
Popped out of the petcock instead of the hose coming off the spigot nipple. Reminds me of my Norton Commando, bought new, and my triumph 500, bought nearly a basket case. PC-11 two part epoxy. Let us see if it holds and resists petroleum.
I now remember and re-experience the finickiness of screw tappet adjusters. Feel by finger when pretty tight, then check with feelers. Redo redo redo.
Also two tank related harnesses were routed the tight way instead of the loose way, a sensor on top of intake manifold and the fuel level sensor. Rerouted.
My recalled oil hose looks nice and dry. Decide to not touch it.
Overall, only minor blasphemies uttered, and a good 1/4 day in the shop.
People seem to be happy cutting off the intake snorkel for more air. I won't do that but I did remove two of the three foam rubber pieces blocking air from the snorkel. I think they are for noise control. They are glued on with contact cement and pop off with no issue, can be popped back on. The worst for air flow is direct to right of the snorkel, between airbox and frame. I will try to see if it makes any difference other than letting the intake be louder.
IMHO the best thing to improve performance of the SR400 is to rack up miles.
The bike seems to get happier and happier as the miles roll on.
Not to mention the Rider!
I rode yesterday, it runs better, feels sharper. More eager t rev past 3k. Some combination of valve adj and open up the sound deadening surrounding the snorkel. I recommend everybody remove the sound deadening foam rubber blocks.

I recently switched to a LED headlight bulb and added a grab handle to make it easier to lift the bike onto the centerstand.
Just turned over 8000 miles.
I wish I had purchased an SR400 back in 2017 instead of the SCR950 I did buy. The scr950 was such a good deal... but man it’s a horrible bike.
Man, I'm sorry to hear your SCR turned out to be a bad deal. The SR is a classic for good reason. I hope I can find one in the near future, without having to put up a Kidney as collateral.
Where did you get the cast wheels (or what bike are the from) and what was needed to fit them. Had an SR500 and love the mag wheel look.
There are a couple of posts from August 2018 back on page 181 of this thread that have information about these wheels. I just checked the web bike Japan site and it appears they may now be no longer available.
