One other thing to add, I was able to navigate the entire California BDR via my Trail Tech Voyager. My only suggestion on the GPX track is that it should have mapped the exact route to the Colosseum Mine and the Reward Mine. We had to do some exploring & guessing to figure out the pathway to those two spots.

Hey Ron - when you said anyone who rides the CABDR won't be able to wipe the smile from their face, you weren't kidding!!!

I was just checking here for snow updates on the expert only section. Looks like it's still a no go.

    Happy trails!

I’m guessing another week or two of warm weather should open things up, or if we could get a couple of our 4x4 friends to break trail, might be sooner!

Glad you are having a great time!! ( oh and I’m still smiling, and it was a year ago) The heat is up in Death Valley, stay safe riders. Early AM starts are a must. Thursday high is supposed to be 106, before the heat backs off later in the week.

I'm not sure when Mazourka Canyon will open up, but it will likely be a long time before Silver Canyon is clear.

I got stopped by snow at a saddle going up the BDR route. Across the valley is the 'main road' to the top. The main road isn't south facing, and it had a lot more snow on it.

(the BDR breaks off from the main road at 37.405424, -118.206071 and goes up the steep way)

Here's where I got stopped by snow, 1500ft from the top:

you can see the main road across the valley:

Where I stopped the snow was about 18" deep. It looked way deeper as the CABDR switched to the north facing side of the route.

For reference, here's what the top looked like in late June 2017:

Ouch, and we've had more snow this year than in 2017! But, I didn't realize they plowed that road, at least it looks it from your last picture.

Thanks! The low route for us it will be. Which is good... Lippincott was just over my limit skill wise, so I'd be taking the low route either way.

The low route is awesome between Lone Pine and Big Pine. It was my favorite section of the CABDR.

Section 7 is clear, but section 7 Alternate probably still has snow on the backside of Mazourka Canyon to the Highway, but it should be getting close to being open. From Big Pine to Bishop on Section 7 Alt will probably take a few more weeks. Still lots of snow up there. I'm in Lone Pine now (but driving through, not riding) and there is light rain, too warm for snow except for the highest elevations. If you have never experienced this section of the Owens Valley during or after a light rain, you are missing out, best aroma therapy there is!

By the way, if you need WiFi in Lone Pine, check out the Lone Star Bistro right on 395 and have an espresso or a coffee and post up your pics!
